From USA,

some Vertol earlier helicopters,


PV-11 :utility helicopter developed from PV-2 for USN.
PV-12 :was a large version of PV-14 also for USN,project only.
PV-17 HRP-2 :was improved metal-clad version of HRP-1 tandem rotor helicopter
with forward-angled transparent nose,high set tailplane and no
tailfins.

Hi,

The Piasecki Model-16H-1A was modified as compound
helicopter project to get high speed,230 mph.

From the under-fuselage pod, this is probably an early study of the YH-16B. Undercarriage details differ but the concept is there.

The picture looks as it were an artist's impression, don't you think? Perhaps it was to represent something like the H-16 Transporter?

Here is a drawing of the H-16 variant (never built, if I am not mistaken) with a big ventral cargo pod. Albeit it could not carry such vehicles as the halftracks that may be seen in your picture.

the Piasecki PA-1 was very heavy helicopter with blade-tip mounted
turbojets,this project appeared in 1955.

Hi,

the Piasecki (later Vertol) PH-55 or Model-55 retractoplane,it was a high speed
convertible aircraft project,I dispalyed it before,it had gross weight of 3,451 1b.

The YH-16/YH-16A was also tested with at least 2 different types of tail planes, ranging from a simple horizontal tail plane to a more complicated one.

Hi,

also Piasecki had a Project for heavy lift helicopter,could carry a 50 ton tank,during the next
half of 1950s,not related to a development of XH-16,no other details are known.

OK, I do not read Polish but I get the gist of what they are talking about.
The booklet 'The Piasecki Story Of Vertical Lift, Pioneers In Progress For Over 50 years' states:

"In 1956 Frank Piasecki and members of his original team left Piasecki Helicopter Corporation and started Piasecki Aicraft Corporation (PIAC) to work on new VTOL aircraft concepts."
and
"Initially, heavy lift VTOL studies were performed for the Army including the movement of a 50 ton tank externally. A matrix of rotor/propulsion systems showed multiple shaft driven rotors were the optimum heavy lift configuration for the near-term and a blade mounted turbo-jet system (PA-1) for the long term. The high development cost of the latter unfortunately dissuaded any further research effort."

There are no pictures of this in the quoted publication but you posted one on 15 May 2009 whilst Starblazer posted the same picture in the discussion about the Hughes XH-28.

Another visit to NARA II RG402 revealed the Report:

PVS-9 "Preliminary Model Specification of the PV-9 Helicopter"
Development of Large Experimental Helicopter 7 March 1946

To be powered by Two Allison GMC Model V-1710-"G' 12 cylinder, liquid cooled aircraft engines
Three bladed rotors

"The tactical mission of the helicopter to to lift high loads at a slow speed with a short range."

Offered was a basic design and an alternative.

Basic Design:

The basic design is known as a "large experimental helicopter crane", and provides the following:
Crew......................2
Endurance............. .5 hours
Payload..................10,326 lbs.

The Alternate Design:

This design will be known as a "long range helicopter crane", and will provide the following:
Crew......................2
Endurance............. 1.5 hours
Payload..................9,526 lbs.

On the PV-9 that Bill provided above, other than just the great find, how about the fact that the cockpit is on top of the fuselage in front of the rear rotor pylon. Information doesn't provide if they have a clear panel below or if they have to rely on spotters looking through the cooling grill up front to offer directions. Just a thought....

Having a look around the Piasecki factory on Google Earth I noticed this from May 2016... given that it doesn't move for the best part of three months I am assuming its a mockup, but it appears to be an X-49 Speedhawk type tail and wings on a modified AH1 SuperCobra fuselage...
