I was recently rereading the old book *Shadow 81* by Lucien Nahum and wondering what that mysterious fighter jet VTOL—sent to combat in Vietnam and driving a plot with a distinct 1970s feel—would actually look like. I’ve already made some sketches and will soon have an interpretation based on the book's descriptions; naturally, it will incorporate many speculative elements, given that it is an aircraft from a work of fiction.

I had come across that image some time ago; it struck me as a fanciful aircraft, though I didn't save any references. Later, with the help of AI, I restored and published it—albeit with question marks...? Days later, I found a thread about it on the forum—thanks to "Lens"—containing relevant information. The artist was Walter M. Jefferies, Jr. The illustration, with the black number and white number legend, first appeared in the 1957/58 issue of Air Progress magazine. Your application of AI to the image did it no favors, distorting the plane and obscuring many of the numbers. I have attached my attempt to piece together scans of the original. Mr. Jefferies went on to work in the Hollywood television industry producing some rather more memorable designs.

Thank you very much JimK for sharing that valuable image that great schematic cross-section that my AI doesn't do justice to in terms of quality; now I know the original author and will give them the credit they deserve. Motocar

On the other hand, the original image I used for AI retouching was quite distorted due to the photographic perspective—the bottom was wider than the top, making the image look disproportionate. I used various digital tools and finally AI, the result is much more presentable than the original.

Cutaway RX-75E VTOL, the fictional fighter from the novel "Shadow 81" by Lucien Nahum, this multipurpose fighter is the protagonist of a daring aerial hijacking, the plane with VTOL capability, supersonic and the latest technology is stolen to carry out the plan.
The descriptions are vague but lead the reader to imagine that fantastic machine. Here I leave you my speculative interpretation of the RX-75E, its internal components, tilting engines, downward folding wings, short-span delta wings, with a high landing gear and combined air-air and air-surface weapons. Everything is technologically consistent with the historical times of the story around 1972. Author Motocar
