So how many launchers in different configurations were built in total? And can anyone add anything more about their evolution? I'd say development investments were beneficial at least in the looks department. :)

Not intending to do a thread hijack, but here are pics of Soviet equivalents for comparision - the MAZ-7909 and MAZ-7929 that were intended as TELs for the Kurier small ICBM.

There were two different entries. The one with the soft tracks is a Boeing/Caterpillar design. Off the top of my head I don't recall who did the other (the wheeled, winning design). I know at least two of the wheeled ones were built as one is at the USAF museum at Wright Patterson AFB and the other, interestingly enough is at the Hill AFB museum about ten miles from where I sit. Don't know where the tracked on ended up at. These are just the ones that were built mind you. I have no idea how the design process went or what kind of land vehicles were considered for the SICBM. Part of the reason I began this thread and the one on the Peacekeeper was to see if I could shake out some information from the forum members :)

Boeing/Caterpillar thing is so pretty futuristic design...

Thank you for the answer. Interestingly, from Internet sources it seems that also the winning design was from Boeing, with Loral. I haven't found any pics of other vehicles than the three mentioned, so maybe they were the only ones constructed, though the one at WPAFB is referred to as the "last engineering model" (emphasis added).

I have a bunch of pictures of the launcher at Wright Patterson that I took a year or so ago. I can post them or e-mail them if anyone is interested.

The other is at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

Check my blog in a few days. I'm going to list all the items I've photographed and make them available.

The Martin one always made me think of Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid.

Hi,
can you confirm me the tractor of the Boeing model was buit by Paccar ?

Interesting that HML high-res photos were removed from DoD imagery server...

Great Boeing HML video http://www.archive.org/details/BoeingAirForceHardMobileLauncher

I would, as long as its priced around the same as the other models and as long as its got at least the raised missile tube and even better the missile out the top (ie not just a low profile vehicle).

PS is there any chance of more DC-Xs being made?

It would be akin to this display model in general features (sans the lights and motors and such)

Apparently not. The first run sold *real* slow, and the guy who runs Fantastic Plastic (not me) feels that ordering another 30 kits from the caster (30 being a minimum production run) would not be warranted. Now, if you and twenty nine of your best buddies all got together and sent money, I'm sure the situation would change....

So... who'd be interested (as in actually willing to pay money) in a 1/72 resin "garage kit" of the Boeing HML? 1/35 would be rather big, 1/72 would be quite feasible. If there's interest.

Ohh yes please, one of those truck based ones would be a fantastic model to have on display

I second that, I would be willing to part with folding money for a kit of the HML, would be excellent fodder for the Cold War SIG display.

Cheers

There are sites like this one but for heavy trucks and such. Those might also be a source of interested parties.

I know that 1/43 is not a usual scale for military models but it's my favorite scale even for trucks, tanks and... helicopters. I want to promote it overall if you hesite between 1/72 and 1/35. I think it's a good compromise (strictly 1/43, not 1/48 or 1/50) so i could put it by Minichamps, Eligor, Norev 1/43 trucks and cars. First i could begin with 1/43 Victoria Hummer and 1/43 Crielmodel (or Schuco) LAV.

An HML in 1/7 would be about 18 inches long. In 1/43, about 29; in 1/35, 36. The difference between 29 and 36 is small enough... especially given that not many people could or would afford a garage kit that long.

Personally, I'd love to have one in 1/18 scale. Preferably RC. With a few Landmaster escorts... :p

Do you know if CAD or blueprints are available for a scratchbuild ? ??? ;D

Ohh yeah I'll get one too. Anyone know if there were any commercial kits for Pershing? A quick net Google search hasn't turned up anything.

Wow a 1m tall Pershing! Probably a bit too big for my office bookshelf. There is an original Topping display model of the Pershing for sale online. But $1,500 is a bit out of my price range!

Actually thats might be one to consider Scott, doing the the Mobile Cruise missiles and Pershing launchers to go with the Midgetman ?

Geoff

Mace's was pretty cool too and I know there was at least one of those done.
