The model above must be part of these McDonnell-Douglas VSTOL studies from 1975 onwards. Not identical but close.

Nice... not familiar to me, but has a late-1970s look (I don't think Allison branded itself as DDA - Detroit Diesel Allison after the 1980s). I would guess a propulsion-related study, with Macs sketching something that would wrap around the engine rather than the other way around.

Yes, the drawings I just posted are from a 1976 AGARD Conference on Variable Geometry and Multicycle Engines (AGARD CP-205 downloadable at http://stinet.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=A040189&Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf)

It is made clear the McDonnell design was created for the purpose of exploring the application of variable cycle/geometry engines to V/STOL mission; it was a Navy study. The colour pic is clearly different, but closely related.

Added post to correct topic. This is the Model 262 (as per Mark's VSTOL Wheel post).

As per McDonnell designation list:

"Navy V/STOL supersonic fighter for Sea Control Ships". J.P. Capellupo, 2/15/1972
