It doesn't seem to be mentioned in this topic, but the GL-224 series was designed by Al Mooney (a prominent aviation figure who designed or redesigned many aircraft from 1925 onwards, including: the Alexander "long-wing" Eaglerock; the Bellanca Airbus, Air Cruiser and "Irish Swoop; the Monocoupe/Lambert/Culver Dart; the Culver PQ-8, PQ-14, PQ-15 and V; the Mooney M-18 Mite and Mark 20.
In the mid-1950s Mooney left the company he created to work for Lockheed, and therefore his personal numbering system continued independently from the company's own, beginning with M-21. He was involved in three major programs there: the GL-225 (Mooney's M-21 or "Opus 21"), the development of which he oversaw from 1956 to 1958; the CL-402 in 1960 (Mooney's M-22), which became the Lockheed-Azcarate LASA-60 Conestoga/Santa Maria; and the GL-224 Hummingbird in 1964 (Mooney's M-23).
After working for several years as a consultant, helping with the redesign of the Burns BA-42 and OMAC-1, among others, he redesigned the Avtek ER-1/Model 400 as the Avtek 400A (which he designated as his final design, the M-24).
