Kbnet again being awesome and translating the full article posted earlier. Here we see J/APG-1’s signal process was upgraded for tracking low RCS targets in clutter.

[what we developed to solve the problem] is the tracking technology for which we are

receiving this award.2 When receiving return signals from the surface, we use the aircraft’s

information to adjust for the optimal radar parameters in real time by using both range

(time) and velocity (frequency) information as in a pulsed doppler radar in order to

discriminate the target signal from clutter. This allows us to detect targets with low RCS.

We believe this will have a large effect at low altitude where the effects of clutter are large.

I was wrong that was the test radar, this is J/APG-2
J/APG-2 is supposed to be the newsest radar for F-2A right?.
What is the slanted radar called?

Btw, now that ASM-3ER also have air to air capability, seem like F-2A is the F-16 version with best BVR air to air capability, even better than F-16 block 60.

In hindsight I think this was just a demonstrator radar. I don’t think J/apg-2 looks that different from J/apg-1.

Yeah, it was a demonstrator sensor system designed by MHI to test a new radar and IRST for F-X prior to GCAP.

It tested a lot of things like the miniaturization of GaN elements, sensor fusion, ESM, ECM. Their tests claimed it had 1.5x the power of a non-descript 5th gen fighter radar which could only logically be an APG-81. Honestly with the ASM-3 Kai it would be nice to see it deployed into mass production, but it likely won't happen and any VLR target cuing would happen through GPS, data-linking with AEW&C or other fighters like F-35 or GCAP.

Resemblance of the Murad 100-A is striking but not surprising as both use GaN and tile architecture. But 72 block of 16 TR modules each, instead of 80. Makes for a radar that is 11% smaller as the F-2 nose is larger than the F-16.
