The ultimate development of British piston engines was to be the 24-cylinder H-shaped 3500-horsepower Rolls-Royce 46H Eagle engine. The first development work on the Eagle was started in late 1942. With this engine flying only Westland Wyvern Mk.I, but in Hawker and Supermarine were drafted fighters with this engine.
The "rivalry" between the two companies is known since Spitfire and Hurricane, then Spiteful and Fury, and then into the jet era between Attacker and Sea Hawk, Swift and Hunter. Due to different dates these projects were not competitors to each other, but they represent the ultimate designs of piston fighters of two famous British aircraft manufacturing firms.
In 1943, Hawker completed the project of its P.1027, essentially a development of the Tempest-equipped 465 Rolls-Royce engine. It had four 20mm cannon mounted in the wing and located under the fuselage on half the length of the aircraft (directly under the pilot - similar to the North American P-51 Mustang equipped with a Merlin engine) radiator. The span of the wing was 12.5 m, length 11.4 m.
The September 1943 draft of P.1030 was very similar to its predecessor, but was larger and its radiators were moved to the leading edge of the wing (this arrangement was attempted on Tempest I). As it seems to the P.1030 project, a full description in the form of a brochure (full brochure) was not produced, but only a four-page report describing the results of the wind tunnel tests and making up the estimated weight.
This project was developed when the Rolls-Royce 46H Eagle existed only on the drawings, but using estimates based on the figures of Rolls-Royce Merlin and Griffon, Hawker expected to receive 4200 hp. It was assumed that this power could be obtained by increased supercharging up to 1.62 kg / cm² and using a fuel grade "140" with 60% intercooling. The wings were made one-piece and 1146 liters of fuel were to be placed in tanks, located and the center wing and fuselage between the engine and the cockpit.
The diameter of the two four-bladed propeller screws (4.1 m) was chosen to give a balance of the level of efficiency between altitude and maximum speed, but it was noted that much better efficiency in climb and in the speed of horizontal flight could be obtained if it were installed Two-speed screw reducer. The document stressed that the development of such a screw should be boosted if the Rolls-Royce 46H engines are put into production.
In the P.1030 project, the maximum horizontal flight speed was to be 819 km / h at an altitude of 6,096 m, the climb rate of 1951 m / min (32.51 m / s), the rise time to a height of 6,096 m should be 4 min, to a height of 9,144 Meters a little less than 7 minutes, the practical ceiling should be more than 12,802 m.

Because of the development of jet engined aircraft and the end of hostilities we never got to see these ultimate single piston fighter aircraft in action. Besides the a fore mentioned Hawker P 1030 we never got to see Nakajima Ki-87, Tachikawa Ki-94-II, Kyushu J7W, Kawanishi J6K, Republic P-72, Dornier Do 335 (technically 2 engines I know and it was built in limited numbers (12?), Chance Vought F2G Super Corsair (also built in limited numbers (10?)), Hawker Sea Fury (production but too late to see action), and the Grumman F8F (also production but too late to see action). Many of these designs would have incorporated air borne interception radar. Who knows what other developments might have come out of the minds of the engineers and designers if the jet engine had not arrived on the scene???
