Future soldier technology (modified thread)

There's a video on the plasma lightsaber project that I have been meaning to post for ages. Must get around to it.

Sounds like fighting the last war to me. A high velocity air burst weapon should have some provision for anti-UAS functionality. If the fire control problem is insurmountable than infantry lasers should be a thing, as the Chinese have done. For counter UAS capability the response time is paramount and as such, sound tactics, ergonomic design and training is necessary and can not wait: the entire enabling tech for lethal autonomous weapons can be bought from skydio for $1k while even cartels are using MAVs in attacks.

Counter-defilade is a thing only if the opponent don't have a sack full of attack MAV that they'd use instead of risking direct fire that gives away their position to be shot at.

The Army released a video showing a combined arms live fire range through the display of their relatively new Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binoculars (ENVG-B) Enhanced Vision System (EVS), which is a worn optical device that uses augmented reality to visually identify targets and terrain features in low light situations. The night vision devices were developed by L3Harris to deliver imagery and data from the battlefield directly to the soldier’s eye. The system includes a new, high-resolution display and an embedded soldier wireless personal area network, rapid target acquisition and augmented reality algorithms to interface with the Army’s Nett Warrior. The complete system will interface with the Army’s family of weapon sights, while enhancing interoperability and data sharing.

This EVS display seems very well thought out in that it seems to effectively distill a lot of pertinent information into a very intuitive graphical representation. It would be very interesting to play with the settings to get a feel of the system first-hand, to gauge how "lossy" or "additive" the information is compared to normal perception. This involves some very interesting cognitive issues. On the other hand all this networking phraseology and signals systems piling on one another makes me worry about proliferating EM vulnerabilities potentially turning into losses as information and communication thrift also equates to survivability.

The GMM, formerly known as the Guided Carl-Gustaf Munition, was fired from both an AT4-derived disposable launcher and the Saab-built Carl-Gustaf® recoilless rifle, defeating different targets at distances from 1,550 to 2,500 meters. The live-fire exercise demonstrated the munition’s fully integrated warhead and fuze against multiple targets, as well as its extended range precision and effectiveness from multiple launchers. The targets were triple brick wall, double-reinforced concrete wall, and up-armored vehicle.
