Fighting to be Heard: The Complete History of the BAe 146

I was fortunate enough to fly on a demonstration BA146 in the early 80s from Khartoum to Port Sudan. The plane showed how quiet it was and there was no reaction frpm the locals, but when it turned its four engines full power with a noise worthty of a Valiant, they applauded loudly. Sudan Airways was operating F27s at the time. Sadly nothing came of the visit.

It looks its going to be available soon by a new aviation publishing company that just started launched. No info on how much it will cost yet. I'm surprised the manuscript didn't get picked up by an established company like Pen and Sword. They are currently publishing a whole series of books on civil aircraft. This book might struggle to sell many copies with such an obscure publisher.

La Jetee Press is aiming at a very different market to Pen and Sword. More graphic and arty.

Truth is I didn't shop the manuscript around for one primary reason: I wanted control over the final product. Most publishers want to cap the number of pages, photos, size of the book, etc. And to me, with the book on the 146, I wanted to ensure the story as I researched it was told without compromise, and in a size format that I felt did justice to the subject. La Jetee will publish the book the way I envision it. In fact, I'm in the final stages of trying to polish up the layouts and reduce the page count (was at 580 pages, it's come down quite a bit), but La Jetee put it out there I should publish it without making these changes. While I do appreciate that approach and sentiment, these changes will make the book shine (hopefully) even more.

Therefore, I believe La Jetee is the right publishing partner for this particular book.

If all goes well, the print ready manuscript will be submitted in 2 weeks. Regular editions of the book will be made available from a variety of outlets, while the limited version will be available direct from me (web address soon).

I understand now. Because this is more of a large oversize book that's lavishly illustrated there was a need to find a publishing house that could accommodate it. I'm happy to hear that your project is getting published just the way you wanted to. This aircraft has always fascinated me and I look forward to ordering my copy as soon as it become available.

I'm happy to announce the book is arriving in ports at the UK and the U.S. and should be available for purchase later this month. It's 500 pages (on the nose), and you can learn more here:

And some pictures of the production version (also has the limited edition G-LUXE clamshell case + packing/shipping box/and goodies)
