Some time ago, I saw a model of a WW1 Junkers(?) fighter that was not produced. It was fairly streamlined for the era and sported a scoop ala Mustang. I'm hoping the membership here might know something about it and maybe have some pics of it. My thanks in advance.

Hello

It seems to be the Junkers J 2 (military designation E II)

Some pics here :

Yes, that's the bird. I wonder what would have happened had it had a better engine?

Out of curiousity, what was wrong with the Mercedes D.II? True it put out less power than, say, the D.III in Junkers' CL.I, but the D.II was also several hundred pounds lighter than its 'bigger brother'.

It was much too heavy (covered with thin IRON sheets)
The J 7 and J 9 (D I ) were similar ,but covered with light alloy ,they were more successful .

Not a thing wrong per se with the engine, but, as mentioned, the aircraft was all metal, frame and skin, significantly heavier than most of their contemporaries.

Just for the record, specifications from German Aircraft of the First World War - Gray & Thetford

Height 3.13 m.

Weight Empty 1018 kg.
Weight Loaded 1160 kg
Speed 145 km.hr.

Regards Bailey.
