Shocker. Bet instead of building a supply chain they just give up.

Thought this was interesting:

Large scale solid rocket motor supply chain is very small. The advent of GBSD should change it. The difficulty is most likely in low solid rocket propellant production.

Not sure what you're smokin' there.

Great read!

Finally, hypersonics supply chains face many of the same cybersecurity vulnerabilities, counterintelligence risks and intellectual property theft as other supply chains. Working group participants discussed the cybersecurity challenges faced by smaller, lower-tier suppliers who often lack the necessary resources for robust cybersecurity measures.

At the same time, recent reports indicate that China recruited several former scientists from Los Alamos National Lab to work on its hypersonics programs. These — and other supply chain vulnerabilities — must be addressed through concerted efforts by government and industry.

This will continue to be a major pain point for America over the next decade. Due to the relationships developed over the past couple decades between the US and China for the sake of technology exchanges and Chinese-American talent acquisition, there are going to be hard decisions that will need to be made to protect American interests here at home. I'm not sure what politicians have the necessary fortitude to go forth with those decisions and risk upsetting Corporate America and China, but they will need to be made.

Largest quiet wind tunnel at mach 8.
Boiler Up! (BSAAE ‘93, MSAAE ‘02 both Purdue)
Lucky you. I am still an undergrad. Not in the US. So no luck for participating in such experiments.

The House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee is proposing legislation for the fiscal year 2024 defense policy bill that would require the Navy to brief Congress on the potential to tweaking the Mk41 launch system to accommodate 34-inch diameter rockets, such as the two-stage booster designed for the Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic strike weapon.

LM new "Growth VLS" is a perfect fit for the requirements:p

Where does it say that?

And how? Replace 4 slots with one big one?

Would be a stumpy missile. (Unless they were going to expand the Mk41 system to accept larger/longer cells.)

yes

Interest that they want multiple speed options and compared it to MALD.
I think the MALD is about adding additional capability beyond strike..so provide a decoy payload as GFE and have it integrated into the vehicle. Interesting. Also considering that this came out after the Navy's HALO became public and was added as a formal Navy effort (funded in the FYDP), and the OSD seems to want to take a different, accelerated approach with being inside the acquisition cycle of something like HALO being a major consideration.

"The weapons system being sought is expected to sustain speeds higher than Mach 4.0, and have a minimum range of 350 nautical miles (648.2 km). This system is expected to support an internal payload of 150 lb (158.76 kg) in weight, have a length less than 15 ft (4.57 m), and an overall system mass less than 2000 lb (907.18 kg). In addition, an ability to fly at a wide range of speeds is required. Multiple propulsion technologies might be employed to meet these requirements, and may include (but are not limited to) advanced turbine technologies, solid and liquid airbreathing ramjets or scramjets, rotating detonation engines, or novel hybrid technologies. For this SBIR topic, a high-speed compliment or augmentation of the Navy’s Miniature Air Launched Decoy (MALD) weapons system is desired."
