Convair Two Engine Tailless

Hi!

Thanks for the high-res picture.
Slightly off-topic - there is something common in project's engine layout with Bristol Brabazon...
Is it possible, that British designers have been famliar with this Convair papers?

Cheers!

That is some serious rear defensive fire power they have got there! 4 cannons and 4 .50s

Interesting too that it appears to have 4 separate single wheel main landing gear

those were Convair proposals for Taillless Patrol/Bomber

labeled "Model P5Y-1" or" two-engine Patrol Landplane"
the project was abandoned in 1944

you need more info ?

An art of a still later configuration, maybe ?

From 'Convair Advanced Designs' , Robert E.Bradley-Specialty Press.

...In this context it seems that Convair's tailless concept was aimed
at the PV replacement program.
In fact it is interesting that several of the graphics associated with this proposal
use the designation P5Y in the title, but it is doubtful that the designations had
any official standing and reflects the rather undisciplined use of designations
at the time...

Thanks for the information Michel.

Rename topic to "Convair Model P5Y-1"?

I don't think it's a good idea. "P5Y-1" was the first designation of the Tradewind flying boat.

The first couple of pictures at the beginning of this thread strongly remind me of a Miles project of the same era.

Convair also applied the designation XP5Y-1 to the Model 38 twin-engine B-24 development.

If that was assigned by Convair, it was more wishful thinking than anything else. Companies sometimes tried to push an aircraft by anticipating its designation, which in the case of the Navy was an easy thing to do... There only ever was a real XP5Y-1, the Tradewind prototype, but it's nice to learn that Convair initially had other plans for the designation, anyway...

Two interesting photos of the wind-tunnel model with the high-lift devices and "tail" extended (from Langley Research Center Web-site):

i look in book "Secret projects: Flying Wings and Tailless Aircraft" by Bill Rose
the "P5Y-1" was called also "Two Engine Patrol Landplane"
the high-lift devices and "tail" extended are only used during start landing and slow flight
and is retracted for high speed and cruise speed
by the way nice find Retrofit

"What do you mean--'he shot the tail off?'"

"Quick! Close that hole with some sheet metal and we'll say it's a new design."
