Hi,


the Boeing company in the road to Model-247 created some projects,the Model-238
was 15 seat three engined medium transport monoplane project of early 1931,followed
by anther 15 seat three engined biplane project,Model-239,and in mid of 1931,offered
the Model-243,a twin engined monoplane project.


Also the unbuilt variants,the Model-247X,armed version of Model-247D,and a variant
with retractable skids and float version.

In some sources, c/n 1952 is mis-named as 'Bai-Ying' - confusing it with Chang's longer-serving but unarmed Boeing 247-D. According to CASM's Model 247 history, c/n 1952 was ex-United Air Lines and "was sold to J.C. Elder of New York City for resale to J.A. Barr in China." No clue who J.C. Elder was. Julius Barr was then Chang Hsüeh-liang's personal pilot.

After the Sian Incident, and despite accepting the deal brokered, Chiang Kai-Shek imprisoned Chang. On 05 April 1937, US Ambassador Nelson T. Johnson sent a telegram from Nanking to then Secretary of State, Cordell Hull. In it, Johnson mentions that Chang Hsueh-Liang "presented his private Boeing plane to Chiang Kai-shek to be included in national air service equipment." That aircraft must have been the 'Bai-Ying' - since the 247-Y was reportedly flown into a mountain by a ROCAF pilot shortly after delivery.

Some sources say that there was another 247-Y armed with nose guns. This too was said to be a modified ex-United 247-D taken on by the "Air Corps". Does anyone have details on that aircraft? Was just one of the C-73s impressed by the USAAF in 1942?

There would be a simple answer to that: No. That double-decker patent is dated 08 May 1934 while the Model 494 would have been from the mid-to-late 1940s.
