Do you think that merchant ships will magically teleport? Once you’ve found them you know where they could be at any given time based on their speeds…sprint for 30-60 minutes, slow listen see if they changed course, adjust if necessary, sprint, slow, listen, adjust, repeat.
And pray that the contact you picked up is going the same direction you are.

Can't sprint near the surface. You'll cavitate and tell everyone in the ocean where you are. On the surface, you're limited to ~14 knots with the modern submarine hull form. Doesn't matter how fast you spin the screw, it just cavitates and you cannot go faster than ~14kts.

The USN submarine radar set only extends about 7ft above the top of the sail, and the antenna horn is low under a fairing. So it's going to have crap for range, if it can even be raised while submerged.
