Aaron Amick does a nice overview of the systems used aboard Astute-Class (17mins44secs)
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2kt84uGaDA
He has a very poor reputation for accuracy. At best his videos are just a regurgitation of what is easily available online. At worst they contain abject falsehoods (e.g., claiming the Navy lied about the Thresher, bizarrely suggesting that PWRs have a secondary loop full of seawater, claiming to publish the lofargram of a Russian SSBN, etc.). He was a sonarman, but even his sonar videos contained numerous errors.

Its amusing all this Tory bashing of 'Wokeness'. Like with the Chagos deal they seem to like decrying the current government for actions they themselves had taken.

The change request to the The College of Arms from Agincourt to Achilles was made a year ago after King Charles rejected the name Agincourt.

Speaking of the Duke, after he was appointed commander in chief of the army of occupation after the defeat of Napoleon, at a social event the French Marshalls turned their backs on him as an insult. He commented to Louis XVIII 'It is not the first time they have turned their backs on me.'

News just in - someone fumes about replacement of one Greek mythological character for another Greek mythological character.

What is woke is all these forrin myths when we have good home-grown British mythological characters we could be using.
Whatever happened to HMS Green Man? HMS Herne the Hunter? HMS Lambton Worm? HMS Black Dog? HMS Boggart? HMS Brownie? HMS Will-o'-the-wisp? HMS Lob Lie-By-The-Fire? HMS The King o' the Cats?

Agamemnon and Achilles... hmmm, good thing that they'll probably never have to work together.
Classics education must be slipping in our public schools, another sign of the woeful decline of England.

They probably see wokeness in cloud formations, or their dog whistles are kazoos.
Actually, it is more than likely that this is a 'planted' leak, and Starmer and Co. have resorted to an old standby of previous governments (not all of them Labour) of 'it's not us, honest, blame the Monarch!'.

Legend had it that King Arthur would return in England's hour of need, but Arthur Wellesley, aka the Iron Duke, has been and gone. So then, other legendary figures would be Sherlock Holmes, Spring-Heeled Jack, Ned Ludd, Gog and Magog, Bond James Bond, and there's a town in north Yorkshire called Robin Hood's Bay... how about Minister of Silly Walks?

Seriously though, Merlin was a good enough name for a now legendary engine, so how about a ship or submarine? Finn McCool / Fionn Mac Cumhaill, Boudicca...

And of course the UK Space Command should have the Bowie, or Tom.

Having read the news about the current monarch for roughly half a century now, suggesting the change from Agincourt to Achilles seems perfectly in character. Did I miss something?
In addition, while I thoroughly respect some of the UK media, there are UK newspapers I wouldn't even touch to wipe my bottom with them.

We really need an easily selected face palm emoticon. It might get worn out though.

Briefly I'll indulge.
First, Chaos.
It was the Civil Service. Ministers went along with it until it reaches someone senior....who rapidly said no.
Change of junior minister, Civil Service proposes Chagos again. Again senior minister intervenes. No.

Second Achilles.
Definitely ships of this name have gained a better reputation in RN service than Agincourt.
But then originally penciled in as Ajax.....

Obviously most people only reccal the bit about Achilles heel, maybe they remember it was shot by an arrow.
What most won't now even know is Achilles was considered the supreme example of a warrior.

Obviously they could have named it anything with an A at the start.
Alfred
Arthur
Athelstan
All names of battleships if I reccal correctly.

The MoD only has to look at the A-class submarines, no less than 46 A's to choose from (of those 16 completed, 30 cancelled).

Alfred has not been used since 1865, Royal Alfred not since 1885 and King Alfred since 1940 has been a series of 'stone frigates', the latest being the RNR shore establishment at Portsmouth since 1994.
There never was an HMS Arthur but there have been two Royal Arthurs - one armoured cruiser of 1891 and a WW2 'stone frigate' near Skegness.
No Athelstan either. Nearest is Atheling, a Ruler-class escort carrier.

Actually looking at the list of RN names, there have been hardly any pre-1066 Kings included, apart from Alfred. Not even an HMS Camelot.

The fleet submarines tend to use capital ship names, which makes for rather slimmer pickings. And one has to consider how it might be perceived... ASSOCIATION is just a bit dull. ARROGANT is prone to be misinterpreted. ALBION would annoy, well, everyone.

Some solid names among the AMPHION class though. Only about a third of them are classical references....

I think that it is about time that there was a submarine called HMS Arthur Hood, especially a nuclear powered attack submarine in the Astute class.

New name, possibly so as not to taunt the French.

It would be far more profitable to name it the HMS Australia in an attempt to offload it to the Aussies now that the prospects of a Virginia class being delivered to them look increasingly doubtful. The Royal Navy can manage to not have a single SSN at sea for months at a time with 6 Astutes as opposed to 7. I'd argue to that the utilization rate can't be any worse with the Australians. If I was Starmer I'd offer my anipodean allies the ex HMS Agincourt/Achilles as well as any two other Astutes of their chosing, on lease. Lease 3 Astutes and buy 8 AUKUS hulls with Australia to get first dibs on deliveries from the second hull onward.

Considering the lack of affection for it's ships by the Royal Navy, how'ze about the HMS Anyanyany Old Iron.... Sponsored by one Harold Steptoe no less.

I'ts OK, I have my coat and hat on already.......

In best British tradition just let people vote on the name, we need an HMS Subby McSubface

The Submarine Officer's course is called the Perisher, which would be an ominous name for any ship.
An ominous name doesn't always work against a ship, see HMS Hesperus.
Unlucky ships will get nicknames, the RN experimental submarines Explorer and Excalibur were called Exploder and Excruciater by some of the crew who sailed on them.

That's the Commanding Officer's course.

I mean the basic school.

It doesn't seem to warrant a name of its own. It was provided by the Submarine School at HMS RALEIGH, and will in future be provided by the Submarine Training Facility at HMS NEPTUNE.

For whatever reason, Royal Navy logic seems to be that everything in one physical location is one 'ship'. I suppose if you're going to accept the fiction that a naval base is a ship, having one ship inside another ship would normally be cause for grave concern.
