NASA Anomaly Review Board Investigates MAVEN Loss of Signal [Mar 4]

A NASA anomaly review board, convened in mid-February, is evaluating the recovery efforts undertaken for the agency’s MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) spacecraft orbiting Mars. The spacecraft was last heard from on Dec. 6. The board also will assess the probable current state of the spacecraft and the likelihood of its recovery.

JUST IN: Asteroid 2024 YR4 will not impact the Moon in 2032!

New observations from the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope have confirmed that the object will pass safely at a distance of more than 20 000 km.

This result was made possible by a close collaboration between ESA’s NEOCC, NASA’s CNEOS, and the Webb mission.

There is contradictory news that I3/ATLAS changing it's trajectory toward Jupiter.
Possible past closer by Jupiter as expected.

Sadly most of that news are from Avi Loeb, not a very believable figure...

Dr. Becky has a new video out about the Big Bang Lithium deficit (Very small quantities were created in the brief nucleosynthesis stage along with Helium and IIRC even smaller trace quantities of Beryllium):


The Big Bang Theory is nearly perfect, except for one glaring problem - where is all the lithium? According to the theory predictions there should be over three times as much lithium in the Universe than we’ve found with our observations. So is this a case of we’ve been looking in the wrong place for all this lithium and we just haven’t found it yet, or is there something wrong with the predictions that the Big Bang Theory makes for what happened in the first 3 minutes of the Universe’s life?​

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A to Re-Enter Atmosphere [Mar 9]

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A is expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere almost 14 years after launch. From 2012 to 2019, the spacecraft and its twin, Van Allen Probe B, flew through the Van Allen belts, rings of charged particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field, to understand how particles were gained and lost. The belts shield Earth from cosmic radiation, solar storms, and the constantly streaming solar wind that are harmful to humans and can damage technology, so understanding them is important.

As of March 9, 2026, the U.S. Space Force predicted that the roughly 1,323-pound spacecraft will re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 7:45 p.m. EDT on March 10, 2026, with an uncertainty of +/- 24 hours. NASA expects most of the spacecraft to burn up as it travels through the atmosphere, but some components are expected to survive re-entry. The risk of harm coming to anyone on Earth is low — approximately 1 in 4,200. NASA and Space Force will continue to monitor the re-entry and update predictions.

Originally designed for a two-year mission, the Van Allen Probes A and B launched on Aug. 30, 2012, and gathered unprecedented data on Earth’s two permanent radiation belts — named for scientist James Van Allen — for almost seven years. NASA ended the mission after the two spacecraft ran out of fuel and were no longer able to orient themselves toward the Sun.

When the mission ended in 2019, analysis found that the spacecraft would re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in 2034. However, those calculations were made before the current solar cycle, which has proven far more active than expected. In 2024, scientists confirmed the Sun had reached its solar maximum, triggering intense space weather events. These conditions increased atmospheric drag on the spacecraft beyond initial estimates, resulting in an earlier-than-expected re-entry.

Our Sun may seem like the center of the universe to us, but it’s actually on the move, orbiting the Milky Way galaxy at a speed of nearly half a million miles per hour. That’s fast, but it’s nothing compared to a recently discovered star runaway that’s blazing a trail across the cosmos.

This stellar speedster, known as CWISE J124909+362116.0 (J1249+36 for short), is a low-mass star, or L subdwarf, that’s not only hypervelocity but potentially on a trajectory to escape the Milky Way altogether.

Thanks, Michel Van. Towards its end, this interesting YouTube video mentions that (presumably due to the efforts of Alan Stern and his team) the newly in-service powerful telescope at the Vera Rubin Observatory will do 30 hours of observations in 2026 of the space just beyond the speeding New Horizons probe, searching for a suitable third flyby target. I had not heard this news. From Chile, constellation Sagittarius will best be visible in August. I hope something is found, so that the plucky probe can intercept and study it.
 
Perhaps hexanitrogen retropropulsion could alleviate things.
How? It doesn't exist as a practical propellant. Fusion could alleviate things too. There are many pie in the sky ideas that could solve the world's problems.

Scientists have finally confirmed that an asteroid struck the North Sea around 43–46 million years ago, creating the Silverpit crater beneath the seabed. New seismic data and mineral analysis revealed shock-formed crystals proving a cosmic collision. The impact likely triggered a massive tsunami and left behind one of the rare underwater asteroid craters on Earth.​
