Type: Twin turbo-shaft short-range airliner.

Program: Superseded three-engined Yak-42M.

Customers: Aeroflot requirement for 200 aircraft in this category.

Design features:
Much more than a stretched Yak-42; only fuselage cross-section is not new; wings have supercritical section devised in collaboration with TsAGI with 256 degree sweepback, increased span and higher aspect ratio; double-slotted trailing edge flaps, and winglets; together with new turbofans, this gives increased performance; digital fly-by-wire flight controls and five-CRT EFIS standard; avionics upgraded fo ICAO Cat. IIa minima.

Flying controls: Fly-by-wire.

Landing gear: Hydraulically retractable tricycle type; four wheel bogie main units; twin-nosewheels.

Power plant: Two Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofans; each 118 kN (26,525 lb st).

Accommodation: Crew of two side by side on flight deck; provision for flight engineer if required; 130 to 180 passengers; (1) single class cabin configuration for 180 passengers at 75 cm (29.5 in) pitch, 162 at 78 cm (30.7 in) pitch, or 156 at 81 cm (31.9 in) pitch, all six-abreast with center aisle; (2) 12 four-abreast in first class cabin at front at 96 cm (37.8 in) pitch and 126 at 78 cm (30.7 in) pitch; or (3) 12 first class, 24 business class at 87 cm (34.25 in) pitch and 96 at 78 cm (30.7 in) pitch. Doors at front and rear of the cabin, with service doors opposite; two emergency exits each side, over wing.

Hey ucon, you're posting some GREAT stuff on this forum!

I have one request though: Russian letters do not translate well in filenames. In their place, all we can see on the screen is a series of question marks such as "??-42? ?? ?? ?? 02 0.jpg".

Is it possible for you to provide a readable equivalent to these files' names in Western type? Thanks in advance!

Looks like the United Aircraft Corporation might yet get the opportunity to revive the Yak-242 and Yak-46 programs, although it's Beriev component in particular may have other ideas. From the Christian Science Monitor, via msnbc.com.

Why would United Aircraft Corporation revive the Yak-42M/46/242 projects when it has orders for the MS-21 program?

I'd forgotten about the MS-21. However I do think the Yak-46 is well placed for a possible revival due to the renewed interest in propfans.
 
I wasn't aware of the Yak 46M trimotor; does anyone know when it dates from and what engines it would've been equipped with?

Yakovlev Yak-46-1 (1st variant - Turbofan)

Twin Turbofan Short-Medium Range Passenger Transport

The design study for the Yak-46-1 started in early 1991 and was included in the State Air Transport program up to the year 2000. It was adopted by the Russian Transport Minister on 22nd May 1992.

Four project versions were envisaged, single class with 168 seats, mixed classes of 12 first class and 114 tourist class, convertible passenger/freighter and casualty evacuation.

It was a conventional low wing monoplane with under-wing engines and super critical high aspect ratio wings with a sweepback of 25 degrees. It had winglets and a swept tail. The tail plane was located on the tail cone.

The Yak-46-1 had fly by wire flying controls. It was fitted with hydraulically retractable tricycle type undercarriage with a four wheel main bogie unit and a twin nose-wheel. Doors were located at the front and rear of the cabin on the port side. On the starboard side were service doors. There were two over-wing emergency exits. The aeroplane featured integrated flight and navigation communications for operation in category IIIA conditions.

Yakovlev Yak-46-2 (2nd variant - Pusher Propfan)

Twin Propfan Short-Medium Range Passenger Transport

The design study for the Yak-46-2 started in 1990 and was included display in model form at MosAero Show 1990. Development was dependent on the development of the propfan engines. It was entirely different from the Yak-46-1 except it had the same fuselage and accommodation. The wings were further to the rear and featured a new tail unit. It had two side mounted pusher engines.

Four project versions were envisaged, single class with 168 seats, mixed classes of 12 first class and 114 tourist class, convertible passenger/freighter and casualty evacuation.

The Yak-46-2 had fly by wire flying controls. It was fitted with hydraulically retractable tricycle type undercarriage with a four wheel units and a twin nose wheel. Doors were located at the front and rear of the cabin on the port side. On the starboard side were service doors. There were two over-wing emergency exits. The aeroplane featured integrated flight and navigation communications for operation in category IIIA conditions.
