Decades have passed since a space station primary structure has been manufactured in the United States. Vast is changing that. Our Haven-1 qualification primary structure is in its final stage of welding at our HQ facility. Next, the completed structure will go to our Mojave, CA facility for a critical test to demonstrate its ability to handle the pressure and dynamic loads of launch and operation.

Our Haven-1 primary structure qualification article was shipped to our Mojave, CA testing facility this morning. The shipment includes the domed window, hatch, and tank mass simulators, which will be used in the upcoming integrated load and pressure test.

The Vast team here is part of a larger in-house group that designed, manufactured, and integrated the article at our Long Beach Headquarters.

Vast has signed an agreement with NASA to test its Haven-1 space station at an agency facility ahead of its launch next year.

Vast announced April 3 that it signed an agreement with NASA to conduct environmental testing of Haven-1 at the Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Ohio. That center, formerly known as Plum Brook Station, features facilities for thermal vacuum, acoustics, vibration and other tests.

We’re running the final qualification milestone of a critical piece of flight hardware for Haven Demo: the Power Distribution Unit (PDU).

The PDU is responsible for distributing battery and solar power to the avionics, propulsion, and communication systems that control the satellite. It protects the satellite by isolating faulty circuits, so that the vehicle can keep operating during the mission.

This final test is the thermal vacuum (TVAC), where we are testing the PDU at temperatures more extreme than what it will see in low-Earth orbit.

Vast has officially opened its new Long Beach headquarters, a 189,690 sq. ft. campus to support the world’s first commercial space station and the successor to the International Space Station.

Our new state-of-the-art facilities are enabling our engineers to continue their progress toward the launch of Haven Demo later this year and Haven-1 in 2026.

Haven Demo is now undergoing electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing. This critical test ensures all onboard avionics are protected from signal interference during integration, transport, launch, and spaceflight.

As we look ahead to Haven-1, this testing also confirms that the radios on the space station are fully compatible with the @SpaceX Dragon spacecraft’s transmitters and receivers.
 
These systems' functions range from circulating fresh air through the station

As much as I like space stuff, I am compelled to ask, just where is Vast getting that fresh air?

At my apartment I had the windows (on 2 sides) open all yesterday and last night with a just barely there breeze of 50F, 10C, air, and it was a wonderful thing; that does not appear to be an action one can take on a space station.

We successfully tested Haven-1's payload power module with Polar, the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Johnson Space Center’s Cold Stowage payload hardware, at our headquarters in Long Beach, CA. The power module, built in-house, was tested to NASA standards and demonstrated that we can support scientific samples transported at temperatures between -95°C and +10°C.

Developed by the Engineering and Innovative Technology Development (EITD) team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Polar is a frequent flyer to the International Space Station (ISS). This test was one of many to ensure that our Haven-1 Lab is compatible with our range of payload partners.

.Vast is ready to ensure a continuous U.S. crewed presence in LEO after ISS. Space station startups must prove hardware in orbit - not just paper & renders. Starting with simpler demo missions is key, or NASA won’t know who can perform in space for longer.

Mission simulations for Haven Demo are underway at the Vast Mission Control Center. Launching later this year, Haven Demo will test radiation tolerant computers, power systems, software, sensors, reaction control systems, propulsion, radios, ground stations, and command and control to inform learnings for Haven-1, the world’s first commercial space station.

The simulations build mission readiness, integrating our mission operators, control room, ground software, and infrastructure with a hardware-in-the-loop version of Haven Demo.

The first commercial space station, Haven-1, is now undergoing assembly for launch

To get a sense of the overall landscape as the competition heats up, Ars recently interviewed Voyager chief executive Dylan Taylor about his company’s plans for a private station, Starlab. Today we are publishing an interview with Max Haot, the chief executive of Vast. The company is furthest along in terms of development, choosing to build a smaller, interim space station, Haven-1, capable of short-duration stays. Eventually, NASA wants facilities capable of continuous habitation, but it is not clear whether that will be a requirement starting in 2030.

Until today, Haven-1 had a public launch date of mid-2026. However, as Haot explained in our interview, that launch date is no longer tenable.

Vast Advances Haven‑1 Into Integration Phase [Jan 20]

Vast, the company developing next-generation space stations, announced that integration has begun on Haven-1. Scheduled to be the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1 is designed as a standalone, crewed station and serves as the first step for Haven-2, a multi-module station capable of supporting a continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit (LEO) that is Vast’s proposed successor to the International Space Station (ISS).

Haven-1 is an integral part of the company’s hardware-rich development approach that is putting flight-hardware and systems through rigorous ground and in-space testing to accelerate learning, reduce technical and schedule risk, and unlock new commercial and government capabilities in LEO. Haven-1 is designed to expand access to space and provide an affordable platform for microgravity research, manufacturing, and both national and international space infrastructure.

The first phase of Haven-1 integration includes installation of the station’s pressurized fluid systems, including thermal control, life support, and propulsion system tubes, and component trays and tanks. These systems will undergo pressure, leak, and functional testing. The second phase of integration will incorporate avionics, guidance, navigation and control systems, and air revitalization hardware. The third and final phase will complete the vehicle with crew habitation and interior closeouts, exterior micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shielding, thermal radiator installation, and solar array integration, bringing Haven-1 to a fully flight-ready configuration. Vast remains focused on completing integration and conducting a suite of system environmental tests at NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility later in 2026.

Based on the current integration timeline, Vast is updating its schedule for Haven-1 to be ready to launch Q1 2027. Haven-1 is contracted to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. With each milestone, the team gains more data and greater certainty, enabling timelines to become progressively more precise. Haven-1 represents a true zero-to-one development, and as Vast moves on to its second, third, and subsequent stations, schedule precision will continue to improve as systems, processes, and integration maturity increases. Throughout this process, human safety remains the team’s top priority, with development and manufacturing pace carefully balanced to ensure mission integrity.

“From the beginning, our business plan has been about building a sustainable future in orbit, one that meets today’s market while creating the foundation for what comes next,” said Max Haot, CEO of Vast. “Haven-1 is not a concept; it is real, flight-tested hardware designed to carry forward a continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit for America and its allies. By vertically integrating design, manufacturing, testing, and operations, we’re moving with both speed and autonomy. Haven-1 brings the next era of space stations within reach and helps ensure there is no gap in our ability to live and work in space beyond the ISS.”

Vast’s hardware-rich, stepping-stone approach accelerates development while improving safety and reducing cost by building, testing, and flying systems early. This is reinforced by Vast’s vertically integrated model, which has already delivered a 10X reduction in primary structure manufacturing costs compared to traditional space station programs, while increasing capability, improving schedule certainty, and shortening manufacturing timelines.

Haven-1 Development: Recap of 2025 Milestones

Throughout 2025, Vast completed a series of major Haven-1 milestones, advancing the station from component-level development to a fully qualified flight structure.

In October, Vast installed and completed fit verification of the passive docking system on Haven-1, confirming mechanical alignment, and interface compatibility with visiting crewed spacecraft.

In late 2025, Vast conducted acceptance testing of the Haven-1 flight primary structure, culminating in full-scale pressure testing at Vast’s testing site in Mojave, California. The flight primary structure was pressurized beyond nominal operating conditions to validate structural margins, weld integrity, and leak performance, marking a critical step toward human-rated operations.

The Haven-1 primary structure represents the second primary structure Vast has completed in one year and demonstrates the company’s leadership in returning space station manufacturing and testing to the United States after more than two decades.

Vast is now the only operational commercial space station company to have successfully flown and operated its own spacecraft in orbit. On November 2, 2025, Haven Demo, an in-orbit testbed for key space station technologies and the first step in our stepping stone approach, achieved mission success. Through Haven Demo, core systems, including power, avionics, ground systems, propulsion, and guidance, navigation, and control, were validated in space, directly informing the final design of Haven-1.
 
As much as I like space stuff, I am compelled to ask, just where is Vast getting that fresh air?

"Fresh" as in "CO2 scrubbed, CO burned, etc ad nauseam and fit for human lungs"
