From, Helicopters Before Helicopters,

Mr. Rudolph Dressler design a helicopter in 1908.

Helicopter c.1909 = OH; 40hp Curtiss 8. Little data provided by Jane's except
for having eight 16-blade 2'0" helices, each enclosed in a separate well, and a
total weight of 500# "not including aviator."

If there any picture or drawing ?.

I suspect your extract relates to the Dorland Helicopter, which is also listed in Jane's. The entry you've quoted seems to have been a recap of this;

From: "Aeronautics" - September, 1909 - page 107

"L. S. Dorland of San Francisco is at work on a helicopter of novel design.
There are eight propellers of 12 blades each, 24 inches in diameter,
revolving in a casing with individual wells for each propeller. When
completed the machine will weigh about 500 pounds. The motor is a
Curtiss 8-cylinder, 40 horse power."

Paul

Thank you Aerohydro,

and also from, Helicopters Before Helicopters,Mr. Wade;

c.1909 = Sayeth Jane's: "Extraordinary claims have been made for this machine and its applicability to an ordinary motor car, producing the opinion that it is a mere myth. It appears, however, to be in the ordinary category of 'air suckers*,' collecting air in front and above, creating a partial vacuum, and expelling the air behind and below." (*SEE 1909 Lake, 1909 Thompson).

Regarding the Wade machine; here's a newspaper account that I've found:

From: "The Lake County Times" - July 21, 1909 - page 1

CHICAGO MAN APPEARS BEFORE LOCAL INVENTORS BOARD

"Another inventor has come to the Hammond Inventors' council
for support in the marketing and financing of his invention. That
inventor is John A. Wade of Chicago, and he claims to have an
Invention that will revolutionize an industry.

Mr. Wade describes his invention as a vacuum producing propeller.
He claims that it is operated on the principle that when you create
a vacuum you create the greatest pulling, rather than propelling,
power in the world.

Mr. Wade described his patent to Otto Knoerzer of the Champion
Potato Machinery company, and Mr. Knoerzer was well impressed
with the invention. Mr. Wade claims that he can propel an
automobile by his invention, and when it is perfected he says that
automobiles will be pulled through space by simply exhausting the
air in front of the machine.

While Mr. Wade was clear up in the air over his invention, Mr.
Knoerzer adopted his usual tactics of bringing him down to earth
and then he was ready to talk business to him. Mr. Knoerzer will go
to Chicago to look over the machine, and if it is constructed on the
fundamentally correct principle, the Hammond man will make
his recommendations to the Inventors' council.

Mr. Knoerzer says that if Mr. Wade can convince him that there is
an economy of power In his machine and that it could be made a
commercial success he will do all in his power to aid him in the
development of the idea.

Mr. Wade makes the following claims for his invention:

I claim for this machine more draught with less power.

More power with less fuel.

More days run with less repairs.

Greater speed than is possible to obtain by traction.

A diversity of application without alteration.

Can deliver 300 per cent more draught on the link on the axle on the
hull of a boat than can be delivered by some motive power in any
other way.

All by atmosphere pressure.

Greater than steam, gas or electricity.

I am the original discoverer. I am the sole owner of the patent.

I challenge the world to produce its equal without infringing."

I have done a quick search of the usual patent websites, but have not located the aforementioned patent.

Cheers,
Paul

Mr. Klassen,

Gyroplane c.1910 = Jane's description: "Girder framework on a runner
forward, and two wheels aft. Four 12-sided slightly mushroom planes,
carried one on either side right forward and right aft; four chain-driven propellers under each plane." That's all you get for now.
