The H.P.56, from Putnam's 'Handley-Page', page 383.
There's a description on pp. 381-6.

cheers,
Robin.

H.P.55, same source, page 380.

Designed to Specification B.1/35, itself a replacement for the B.3/34 AW Whitley, the H.P.55 was ordered,
however disagreements between the designers and the Ministry concerning the defensive armament, and
deficiencies in the design appearing at the mock-up stage, caused work to be indefinitely suspended.
An increase in bombload was requested, this requiring an increase in power, the result being the H.P.56.

cheers,
Robin.

Doesn't look more advanced than Whitley itself... ??? What engines would it be powered?
Can you specify here any technical data for the H.P.55 and 56? (Unfortunately I don't have Putnam book :( ).

H.P.55 :-

Engines :- 2 Bristol Hercules ISM (1,000 hp) or RR Merlin XX (1,200 hp)

Span 95', Length 65' 3", Speed (estimated) 251 mph, Range (estimated) 2,000 miles.
Crew 4.

H.P.56 :-

Engines :- 2 RR Vulture X (1,700 hp)

Span 88', Length 66' 6",wing area 975 sq ft, Speed (estimated) 320 mph, Range (estimated)3,000 miles.
Crew 4.

Data from Putnam's 'Handley Page'.

cheers,
Robin.
