Tu-2 Paravan
"The most startling modification was the Tu-2 Paravan (paravane). Two of these were built, to test a crude way of surviving impact with barrage-balloon cables. A special cable woven from high-tensile steel was run from one wingtip to the other via the end of a monocoque cone projecting over 6m (20ft) ahead of the nose. The nose and wingtips were reinforced. First flown in September 1944, this lash-up still reached 537km/h (334mph) despite the strange installation and a 150kg (331 lb) balancing weight in the tail. These trials were not considered to have been successful."
"Yet another 1944 modification was the Tu-2K (Katapult), fitted with test ejection seats. The first Tu-2K fitted the test seat in the navigator’s cockpit just behind the pilot. A second ejection-seat tester had the experimental seat mounted in an open cockpit at what had been the radio operator’s station in the rear fuselage."

"In early 1945 the Type 104 radar-interception system began flight testing (the first to be airborne in the Soviet Union). The system had been designed from 1943, by a team led by A L Mints, and the Type 104 test aircraft had begun flight testing on 18th July 1944 but with the vital radar simulated by ballast. The pilot had a modified sight, which was later linked to the radar, and fired two VYa-23 cannon installed under the forward fuselage. The rear fuselage was faired over and contained nothing but a balancing mass."

"The Tupolev ANT-29 (military designation DIP – Dvukhmotorny istrebitel pushechny, "twin-engined cannon fighter") was a 1930s twin-engined, cannon-armed fighter designed by Alexander Arkhangelsky and built by Tupolev."

ANT-29 was developed from ANT-21. Also ANT-30 was developed from ANT-21.

APK-100 recoilless cannon.
PRD-76 explanation. Almost same mechanism compared with other recoilless cannon?
"On this plane were mounted guns RPD-76, modernized to ensure degree in flight. To reduce drag muzzle guns were closed cones, released before firing. Each gun had a shop at five rounds with feeding and refreshing mechanism. The shop was a pipe reinforced parallel barrel guns. For loading the gun once the cartridge is supplied on a shelf on the muzzle part of the trunk, and then under the influence of the oncoming air flow and the stored energy of the spring cartridge in the barrel in the dosylalsja PIN. Loading management produced pilot. The shot came when closing an electric circuit using combat buttons mounted on the control stick."

"More promising was the ANT-29. This was a conventional, highly streamlined twin-engined monoplane, with a single 102mm DRP or two APK-8 in the fuselage. The ANT-46, a basically similar design, instead had two APK-11 guns in the wings, and apparently the design goal was to use the 100mm APK-100. But the arrest of Tupolev and the disappearance of Kurchyevskii ended the development of fighters with recoilless guns."

Tupolev DB-2(ANT-37).
"The Tupolev ANT-37 (or DB-2) was a Soviet twin-engined long-range bomber designed and built by the Tupolev design bureau,[1] the design team operating under the guidance of Pavel Sukhoi.The aircraft did not enter production, but three examples of the type were used for research and record breaking flights."

"ANT-37bis was the third aircraft of the DB-2 family. Fourth airframe with a wing serving as a huge fuel tank was abandoned on assembly stage.
'Rodina' rolled out in February 1936.
Record flight was performed by women crew (pilots V.S.Grizodubova and P.D.Osipenko, navigator M.M.Raskova) on September 24-25 1938. 6000km route across the expanse of the Soviet Union from Moscow to Komsomolsk-on-Amur in the Far East. With the aircraft icing up over the Siberian wilderness, the women tossed everything movable out of the aircraft to try and gain altitude. Finally, Raskova, who had been the navigator, decided she would have to go as well. She marked the aircraft's compass heading on a map and bailed out into the darkness. Local hunter eventually rescued Raskova, and helped her to get to the landing site on October 5.
The two remaining pilots performed a safe emergency landing in the dry marches near Kerby village, slightly short of their destination. 'Rodina' covered 5908km in 26h29min."

DB-1/ANT-36 was developped from ANT-25.

"In the summer of 1936, one of the mass-produced Ant-36 was remade for fitting an-1 diesel engine. The work was carried out under the supervision of A.s. Moskaleva and went into the mainstream establishment record Rd-d. Unlike serial DB-1 on it was the contractor in excess of chassis. From June 1936 year plane Pro test showing walked the reliable operation of the diesel engine and the possibility of a significant increase in range."

Hi! Very clean ANT-41 torpedo bomber prototype.


"The Tupolev ANT-41 was a prototype Soviet twin-engined torpedo-bomber of the 1930s. A single prototype was built, which was destroyed in a crash. No production followed, with the Ilyushin DB-3 serving as a torpedo bomber instead."

You can see the radiator which is located at inside of the engine nacelle.

It was not a success.

A minor correction:

The Di-8 variant with the two APK recoilless rifles only had a single ShKAS for the rest of its fixed forward firing armament. The Di-8 variant armed with 2x20mm ShVAK (or 5x20mm ShVAK) didn't carry any recoilless rifles. See this interesting post:

"The experience of using the Tu-2 to solve various combat missions led the Air Force to the conclusion that it was necessary to create a new type of front-line vehicle - a high-speed day bomber ( SDB ). High speeds and large flight heights were supposed to provide him with the possibility of applying daily bombing to enemy targets without escorting fighters. The Tu-2 was considered the most suitable as the base vehicle for the creation of such an air force aircraft. That is why the State Defense Committee adopted a decision on May 22, 1944, according to which the OKB was to build a DRB aircraft in duplicate with the time of their presentation for testing: the first copy - June 1, 1944, the second copy - October 10, 1944."

"The report noted that the SDB on its flight data far exceeds the same type of domestic and foreign aircraft, including Mosquito. A number of defects were noted, the most serious of which was the insufficient survey of the navigator. The aircraft was not recommended in the series, since the tests of the ╚68╩ (Tu-10) machine were already beginning, from which even higher characteristics were expected.

Just got a copy of the Encyclopedia of Myasishchev Aircraft, OKB-6 - ANT-41 and Li-2 Story, written by our dear Ucon (Konstatin Udalov) and Marek Rys. I am very impressed with the quality of this material, I had the feeling thar after reading this book no aditional info about these amazing projects are needed, the history of the projects are covered until the smallest details. Incredible images, full of 3-view high quality drawings, magnific action pictures and many surprise aircraft variants never seen before. I really recommend it to all members, it is a trully masterpiece in aviation history.

Hi everyone!
I just received my copy of this book. Like most of avicopress publications, it covers some aspects of the Myasishchev Design Bureau and its aircrafts / aircraft projects. This book is the first volume in a planned series about the aircrafts of OKB-6 (special construction office no. 6). The authors, the well known Konstantin Gennadievich Udalov and artist Marek Rys, present a profoundly researched and well illustrated book about the ANT-41 (T-1) and Li-2 (PS-89) planes. Udalov starts with the designhistory of the ANT-41, which begann in the early 1930s and gives detailed historic and technical background. Every designstage and most of the designs, prototypes, projects and production aircraft are either covered on photo, drawing or 3d illustration (by Marek). But not only the planes are describe, even some of their - more or less well-known - designers are covered; e.g. A.P. Tchernavskii. The second (and main) part of the book is dedicated to the legendary Li-2 (pp. 38-179). Especially this part is brillant: text and illustrations are matching perfectly and many new informations can be found here, not only for historians and aircraft enthusiats, but also for modelers. It´s getting obvious here, that the Li-2 was not just a simple copy of the american DC-3, but the Myasishchev engineers refinde it in an impressive manner and the soviets adapted it to fit the needs. The Li-2 programme gave a serious boost to the whole soviet aviation industrie. It is astonishing to look at the variety of designs and projects derived from the basic airplane. The last 30 pages show nearly all of the realised and planned Li-2 versions, military and civil ones. This plane could be adopted to every need: (night-)bomber, rescue plane, transport, flying testbed, relay aircraft, research aircraft etc. etc. My favorite version is the giant vintokriil (a vtol gyrocopter) version.
The book is written good and even readers with little russian language skills should be able to cope with it.
So, highly recommendations! I´m looking forward for the next volumes...

Wonderful publication of AVICOPRESS!
A huge archival material with a clear demonstration of documents from that period, excellent 3D graphics, detailed drawings.
I have no doubt that it will be informative, everyone who wants to get acquainted with this book.
I look forward to the next volume and many thanks to KG Udalov for the cool work in the light of the coverage of the history of Russian aviation!
