May i ask , does anyone have some pictures of the cockpit of this jet ? Quite a shy bird , not much on it around, did found some quite nice Su-15 cockpit pics , but almost nothing for Su-9...

Also , does anyone have pictures of this bird armed with R-55 IR missiles???( all i ever saw on the subject was a profile on a russian site...)

Thnks you very much for your help!

Thnak you for your replies Borovik and Verner. Quite interesting drawings and pics there .Meenwhile i did found something on a french forum , its a drawing of the cockpit ( instrument panel), and it does indeed show some interesting traits for the Su-9 , for instance , it doenst have anything like an optical sight!( understandable). I thought the cockpit would be more like a Mig-21( same generation , same radar etc) , but it looks very different ...

I'm even more eager now to see a nice cockpit shot!(Unfortunately the only ones available are of a derelict one ...i found one on airwar.ru too...

Also Verner, the IR missiles i'm talking about are not Atolls( K-13/R-3S) , the R-55 is an infrared developement of the K-5MS(RS-2US or in NATO code AA-1 Alkali)...

Heres the pics of the cockpit and the R-55 missile...

Nice picture ,thanks for looking it out, its not the R-55 tho!

Those are RS-2US beam riders, the R-55 has a blunt IR nose , plus it doesnt have the aerials on the fins...here's a drawing of the 3 generations of K-5 familly for comparison ...

Is it just me, or does the Su-9 look a lot like the MiG-21, especially from the top? *scratches head*

I presume the bolted thing in front of the pylon is a refueling boom. Isn't that a unique arrangement?

046q1g-jpg.194867

Nope, it´s the missile pylon for the RS-2US:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e/K-5M_Air-to-Air_Missile.jpg
The boom in front of the pylon is to remove a protection cap at the missiles front. The cap is attached to it and will be removed right after launch.

More specifically, the APU-19 and APU-20.

Later production Su-9s had the modernized APU-19D and APU-20D launch rails, with the OR-4 umbilical connectors for the missiles instead of the earlier OSh-56, and the electronic distribution box was removed.

The R-55 used the modified APU-68UM.
