I don't know why it was kept at the SAAF museum, but I think SA Bushwar said that he took those pictures 2 years ago, and they're obviously transporting it somewhere, with the School of Armour Museum in Bloemfontein the likely candidate.

It would be great if it was, and if so, even better if someone could get decent pictures of it.

ahh so this must be the one on the back of the panzer skool tank transporter. I read there were only 2 of these prototypes but then read here there were a few more made.

I wonder if there is any conceptual or mechanical link between the 8x8 Ratel Log, and the 8x8 armoured car concept that was part of the initial Rooikat programme in the late 1970's, and based on Ratel components?

The Mechem MC-90 was an armoured car in about the 7 ton category, that was based on Unimog mechanicals, and featured an Eland-90 turret. More power, bigger tyres, and improved ground clearance meant better cross country performance over the Eland.

Reply 134 on Page 9 shows the AC-200 family of vehicles.

The last image of that post shows what appears to be an 8x8 version, which looks like a logistics vehicle for the same role that the Ratel 8x8 Log was designed for.

This is how the vehicle looked recently.

The last photo was taken at a show in 2010, so either they have restored it, or more than one vehicle was built.

The second picture appears to show a split "H" style drive train with exposed drive shafts (I assume duplicated on the other side of the vehicle). Would that be correct or is it unusual in having the drive train down only the one side? The exposed drive shafts look like they'd be rather vulnerable in either case.

Appears to some some of tank(?) gun mounted on what could be a 17pdr mounting.Some experiment/trails rig for testing the gun?Anyone?

Looks pretty big, even for the 17-pdr carriage. It could be the GT7 105mm tank gun.

Re: the pictures of the various guns on 17 Pdr carriages and mountings. Often, when proofing a gun, or proofing rounds for it, a tube will be mounted on a temporary mount and many of these are reminiscent of proofing mountings I've seen in Australia for 105mm and 155mm guns.

The above model appears to be the LMT entry for the Ratel replacement programme, the initial stages of Project Hoefyster.
This vehicle was apparently the winning design, before the programme was revised, leading controversially to only one submission from Patria, and their subsequent gaining of the contract.

Going through the thread, and particularly the translation I did of the article on page 24, reply 349 of this thread, I wonder of anyone has any info on the SADF Technical Corps vehicle submission for the original Ratel programme trials in the 1970's, called Springkaan?

Also, the translation I did indicates that the Springfield Bussing Buffel submission, that was developed into the Ratel, is parked to the right of the front gates at 1 South African Infantry Battalion in Bloemfontein.

Does anyone have any pictures of this vehicle?

Thanks Xiaofan, but those are the South African entries for the initial Hoefyster programme, prior to the sole entry of Patria into the revised programme.
Those are the Mechanology entry, the LMT entry, and the OMC entry respectively, followed by the Patria Badger. The ADSA vehicle is missing from the original first 3, the 4 of which made up the original 4 South African entries in the original programme.

I'm looking for the SADF Technical Corps Springkaan vehicle, and the Springfield-Bussing Buffel prototypes that took part in the trials in the 70's that led to the Ratel ICV.

Pictured in the middle of the pic,"Wildebeest" at 25 Field Regiment(engineering corps) at Oshikati - claim of one example only and described as a "shitty ride".

I thought it might be the same vehicle 4th from the left in that photo, but looking at that picture and your picture above, it's obvious that the vehicle in your photo can't be the same.
A comparison to the Buffels parked close by in both pics show the one on Page 1 of this thread to be a larger vehicle, and thus not the same.

Off f/book group,poster says this was proto of system(project "banica") and on 2nd/3rd pic the gun was merely tied down to a railway sleeper on a MB guntractor as proof of concept,this circa '84 during "ops thunder chariot",if memory serves,a major convenional excercise at Lohatla battle school.

As seen earlier in this thread in the scarce pics of it before it appeared at the Armour Museum, the turret is not the same as the TTD, nor the Olifant Mk1b as found today at the museum, and looks different from the LIW turrets posted earlier in the thread.

I don't think the Ferret could carry many rounds of 106mm RCL. IIRC they are just over a metre long and there isn't much room inside a Ferret.

Kadija your right the whole thing was a lash up as they didn't have anything else to hand, but it woked well enough for something only ever used in training. The vehicle got about well enough & the 12,7 BMG was tried as well but not adopted.

I think four rounds could be packed end up in the Ferret & the other ammo came along in a Jakklas with a trailer or two as a Jakklas could tow multiple trailers.
