Some Automotive Fun...

A trio of films mixing footage from the Golden Era of car chase films (late 60s - 70s), some later stuff and music. Of the three I like the last one which uses the Black Crowe's Go Faster as the backing track...

I'm unsure if this belongs here, given that it's more so automotive discussion/design analysis. But when one takes a look at the current offering of V12 flagship performance cars, of which only 3 currently exist in the volume market these days. I cannot help but to think that Lamborghini and Ferrari really dropped the ball designwise, especially given how competitive the premium segment is, how prestigious the powertrain and what cars these models replace.

While I can certainly see the resemblance of the 365/4 GTB in the new 12Cilindri, I cannot help to think that the proportions are off, especially with regards to the stance/presence of the car. Furthermore the prominent sharp edges featured on the car clash heavily with more rounded shapes on the vehicle and the overall template given by the Daytona, which was a very smooth car.

The Revuelto on the other hand simply looks messy. Very messy in fact. While the Aventador already introduced more complex geometry into the design compared to the likes of the Murcielago or Countach, there was still a logic and flow to the complexity. Especially in the side profile. The Aventador S (aka the Facelift) in particular turned out to be oddly elegant for such an aggressive design. Something the Revuelto is completely missing. The amount of lines, edges and negative space is astronomically and makes the car look dazzling, not in a good way.

As for the Aston Martin, while the new Vanquish was originally meant to be a mid engine supercar, plans evidently shifted. Now the new Vanquish replaces the DBS Superleggera as Aston Martin's V12 flagship, with the V8 powered DB12 positioned below it, followed by the Vantage as the entry level offering. Out of the three cars mentioned, I think the Vanquish is visually the most pleasing. It's size and proportions give it a distinct presence, the details in the headlights and rounded off vent in the side give it a softness and roundness which make it positively simple. It's easy on the eye in a literal way, almost soothing. As compared to the visual assault that's the styling of the Revuelto or the clash of styles present in the 12Cilindri.

Below are the three cars compared to each other and their predecessors/design inspiration:

Lamborghinis always have been leaning on a supercar side. Aston’s are mainly GT cruisers. Ferrari in my opinion always has been a bit inconsistent in the designs; throwback of that, that from a new car, and etc. The side of the 12Cilindri really doesn’t look good for me. Newer Astons are starting to be more aggressive, but you can still see the GT side of the car. Lambo’s for me are just pure supercars that will end up in kids posters.
