It's been a while, but wasn't there supposed to be an engine change, too, with the P&W PW1216 installed in place of the existing engine? PW126 was essentially an afterburning derivative of the J52 which would have made that a very adapted core, with turbojet, afterburning turbojet, turbofan, and afterburning turbofan developments (J52 forms the core of the JT8D).
