I found a version with a vertical tail here http://www.junshiz.cn/mz/zdj_518_7280_8.html though I'm not sure if this is the original untouched version of if a vertical has been painted back onto the image.

Yes, it has... the vertical stabilizer has been "painted" out. Note that it's also called a "photo visualization."

AFAIK, the X-31 was flown with the vertical tail physically on, but actuators disconnected.
