Triggered by this thread https://www.secretprojects.co.uk/threads/hurricane-with-a-gunner.9607/,
I had a look through my hard drive for the attached photo, which I once got via the German Flugzeugforum,
(original source "Smoke Trails" volume 5 No.2, April/June 1990) and yes, it shows an F-4F Phantom of the
German Airforce with a rear gunner, and no, it's not just photoshopped ! ;)
Of course, this was neither a real modification, nor a project, but a practical joke by members of the JaboG 36 !
The explanation by one of the involved technicians was, that a fuel cell had to be exchanged and to ease working
without petrol fumes, the fuselage bay had got a transparent encapsulation giving someone the idea, to borrow a
G3 rifle, depict this rear gun position and make photos for the regular squadron magazine.
And, judging the posts in the mentioned thread (for those interested : https://www.flugzeugforum.de/threads/3-sitzige-f-4f.2980/ )
as often, it wasn't clear to all, who had seen those photos, that it was just a joke !

That is great, thanks for posting. A laugh is just what is needed right now.

I wouldnt put it past the BRD to do a sneeky trick like this. I am sure the Deutsche Demokratische Republik had its own better version!

Thanks for posting that. Another photo saved for my Phantom Phunnies collection. That's right up there with the USAF F-4E that flew with its wings folded.
