Hi guys,

I need your help. I search for Savoia-Marchetti aircrafts and projects at the pre WWII time. Following aircraft wanted: S.53 & S.54 / S.61 / S.63 / S.68 to S.70 / SM. 76 & S.M. 77 and the S.M.90. I have nothing about this birds. If you can, please answer with pics, drawings and/or technical data.
I hope some of you can help... :p

SM.76 was a SM.75 with Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp engines. The SM.90 was a SM.75 with Alfa-Romeo 135 engines.

There is some information here.

I'll have a look into the others.

SM-77 was a further evolution of the S-55 and S-66 line. Only one built in 1937.

I spoke about many of those aircraft before;

S.63

The italian air force had such misgivings about the S.55 twin hulls arrangement that the Regia Aeronautica asked SIAI to design a bomber Flying-boat that, keeping the S.55 monoplane wing, would use the more traditional central hull with side stabilising floats.
The prototype firs flew on 8 september 1927. The S.63 was tested by Regia Aeronautica at the end of 1927 but the success of the S.55 made its adoption superfluos.
During 1928 SIAI modified the S.63 building a new fuselage for ten passengers and a crew of four members.
One prototype only.

Wingspan 27,32 m.
Lenght 15,5 m.
Height 5 m.
Wing surface 105 mq.
Engines two Isotta Fraschini Asso 500 of 510 hp.
Empty weight 5.200 kg.
Useful load 3.000 kg.
Loaded weight 8.200 kg.
Maximum speed 205 km/h.
Stalling speed 110 km/h.
Ceiling 3.500 m.

It was in front line service with naval and air force units fron the beginning to the end of the great war 1915-1918 in patrol, reconnaissances and bombings flights.

That S.63 is very interesting, thanks very much for the posting.

I'd say it deserves the name 'Flying Clog' even more than the Bv 138. :)

SIAI S.8

The S.8 was the first original SIAI project realized by Raffaele Conflenti.
It was produced as a successor to the F.B.A. appearing in 1917 and being test flown by the swiss pilot Emilio Taddeoli.
Crew included pilot and observer, seated side by syde. The S.8 operated mostly in patrol mission anti-submarine in areas where no enemy fighters were to be met.
Wartime production was of at least 172 units; production was entrusted to CIVES of Varazze and Società Anonima Ducrot of Palermo.
The engine, mounted between the wings, was usually an 180 hp. Isotta Fraschini V-4B, but some machines had a 120 hp. Colombo F.150 and at least one S.8 had a 220 hp. Hispano-Suiza 44 Canon.
Postwar some S.8 was modified as double control.

Wingspan m. 12,77
Lenght m. 9,84
Height m. 3,30
Wing surface mq. 46
Engine 1 Isotta Fraschini V-4b hp. 180
Empty weight kg. 900
Useful load kg. 475
Loaded weight kg. 1375
Maximum speed km/h. 144
Ceiling m. 6000
Range km. 700
Crew n. 2
Armament 1 mt. Fiat seldom mounted + light bomb load

Looking for pictures of the S.55 project derivatives, I failed to find any illustration of the S.77, described as a re-engined version of the S.66.
According to 'SIAI Marchetti S 55' (Mografie Aeronautiche Italiane, by Giorgio Bignozzi, Fabrizio Iannetti, Achille Vigna, Igino Coggi, Sergio Mecchia, 1983) S.77 had a reduced area wing (with larger flaps), the projected engines were three FIAT A.24R, with pusher props, soon replaced with three Alfa Romeo 126, with tractive props.
According to 'Catalogo delle Matricole Militari della Regia Aeronautica' (Andrea Curami & Gianni Gambarini, 1992), the single prototype MM.259 was ordered with three Isotta-Fraschini Asso 500Ri -but there was a difference between 500R and 500Ri ? - but later on receive three P & W Twin Wasp and, at least, three Alfa Romeo Alfa 126 RC.10.
Any chance to see a photograph of the prototype, better than the very small one appearing on IARB (Italian Aviation Research Branch of Air Britain) N. 6/1973, page 131?
Nico

For the S.60,please see;

http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,11392.0/highlight,savoia+60.html

For the S.77, there is a folder in the SIAI archive including a general description and 3-views (large, a folded drawing). There is also a photo, the same published in IARB back then. All in all, a failure. Actually Savoia (still Savoia at the time) answered the 1938 RFP for a transoceanic seaplane but AFAIK never really submitted a proposal. All in all, I think Marcheti was thinking on the line of the later SM-155.

I would love to get my hands on this 3 view you are referring to.
Sorry I am new here but where is this "SIAI archive" ? Is it somewhere on the net ?

Hi,

in the magazine; Scale Aviation Modeller International 1997,but I don't remember exactly
which issue number,I found this; Savoia-Marchetti S.41,and maybe it was a misprint and
they meant S.51 or ....?.
