The Regener Tonne, or Regener Barrel, was a scientific payload intended for the V-2 rocket. I saw a user (Hafidz Rahman) had mentioned it in a thread about the possibility of German WW2 satellite projects, and it certainly seems as close as they came. It's the forefather of the sounding rockets of the Cold War, as it would have carried payloads to measure the characteristics of the atmosphere around 50km altitude. That's short of the 80 needed for it to be a spacecraft, and I have no information about planned flights that might reach that altitude, but that's higher than a balloon could reach for some time.
