Middle step from Space Shuttle copy-cat (OC-120) to Buran as we know it, OK-92 at Vadim Lukashevich site.
http://www.buran.ru/htm/ok-92.htm with excellent hi-res graphics.

Did the Buran actually fly?
As this could be used as the Space Shuttle replacement.

you will be surprised, but it actually did fly on November 15, 1988
no, it can't be used as shuttle replacement as no one needs shuttle replacement at the moment
Buran and Energia are went into history forever

The only complete Buran frame (the one that went into space) was also destroyed in an earthquake.

oh, gosh, what earthquake?

not a earthquake
it was the Roof of „MIK-112“ Hangar collapsed, due to poor maintenance in 2002

poor Buran :'(

Buran 1.01 (11F35 K1) test flight was For NASA very embarrassing
because they Shuttle went back to flight
U.S. Senate and congress men ask: "Can you launch the Space Shuttle unmanned ?"
NASA official answer: "Not, that technical impossible"

some week later Buran made its two Orbit unmanned
with Analog circuits and lands with help of instrument landing system

note in begin of video show Polyus launch
is show how the Energija Analog circuits Autopilot fight for controll

hangar collapse was caused by water leaks that caused rust is support structures...

so the space-flown Buran died such way

I see the components of Energiya in the photos, but I do not see anything that looks like parts of the Buran orbiter. Are there any photos of the orbiter damage available?

The second link is a static test article, correct?

Look at this photo:

You're looking at the buried front end, you can see the cockpit windows.

If I've read this correctly, according to this book :-

http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,4214.0/highlight,buran.html

the final irony is that the roof collapse was caused by the weight of roofing materials placed there in
readiness to repair it, overloading the weakened, and damaged structure.........

cheers,
Robin.

Flateric,

Keep aside Buran. But is there absolutely no chance of reviving Energiya?

...One of the things noted when that footage first got released to the West in quality decent enough was that it was a clear indicator of just how cash-strapped the Evil Soviet Empire was with regards to funding their space program. As we later found out, they really *didn't* have enough money in the budget to replace all the blown-out bulbs on the big lighting towers!

I do not think that is entirely accurate.

The shuttle's autoland system was demonstrated on at least one flight, STS-3.

...This is a navigational aid only, and no, there was no automatic landing performed on STS-3. In fact, there has never been any sort of automated landing system built into any of the Shuttles prior to the loss of STS-107. Since then, they've come up with a cludge system to make it work, but a) it hasn't been tested, and b) takes a bit to get set up because it involves a bunch of patch umbilicals and apparently it has to be an either-or situation where manual vs. automatic control is concerned.

That's a really interesting contrast between OC-120 and OK-92. It appears that OK-92 has significantly less wing area. Was this due to the realization that the US shuttle had unrealistically high cross-range requirements, and that a Soviet shuttle could get by with less?

...How did OK-92 compare to the Analog Buran, then?

The microwave system is a nav aid, but a part of the autoland system. Autoland WAS demonstrated on STS-3, which is part of the reason the landing was problematic.

Feynman actually talks about this in one of his books that covered his part in the post-Challenger investigation. ("What do you care what other people think").

The only thing that prevented a FULL autonomous landing was that the autoland capability did not include the ability to lower the landing gear. The hack that is in storage on ISS right now is in fact only a patch cable from the flight deck to the middeck avionics bay that enables this. The full autonomous capability covers a little more than just landing, and this is called "Remote Controlled Orbiter Capability". You can see a presentation covering it here:
http://www.aiaa-houston.org/cy0607/event-11may07/pres/pres062.ppt
which explains the hack.

Has anyone seen this one before ?? :'(

From L+K 1/1983,

I don't know if that a suitable place for it or not ?.

Thx alot. Interesting but pretty weird from an engineering perspective.
Is it from a Polish source? Could you please expand on the source. And help translate what the caption reads. Seems to talk about a french something.

A.

Thank you my dear Antigravite,

the source was from Czech,called Letectvi a Kosmonautika 1983-01,and the translate;

In relation to the stubborn Soviet news, the Shuttles have become more common. There are speculative reflections about its possible appearance in the Western press.
For example, the French press brought this idea the shuttle with engines for maneuvering in the air as it descends is carried by the Proton rocket.

Apparently L+K art is reprint of Air&Cosmos publication based on AWST attempt to reconstruct BOR-4 vehicle
