War is Boring and offiziere.ch are jointly reporting on a story, coming out via the EX-SKF blog, that the PLAN has suffered a major nuclear accident onboard a sub at the port of Dalian. EX-SKF got the report in turn from a blog (Japanese language) run by a former JASDF pilot.
The accident initially occurred three days ago (July 29th). The port and surrounding area have reportedly been sealed off. No word on whether the sub was a SSN or SSBN.

No in-depth independent confirmation as of yet. I say again, no solid confirmation at this time. Will update as I hear more.

EDIT: David Axe is speculating that the accident may have actually occured at the shipyard complex at Bohai, which is near Dalian.

EDIT2: Correction, apparently boxun.com posted the story before EX-SKF did.

Our eternal rivals at MP.net are trying to narrow down possible locations on the accident, including Xiao Pingdao.

Has this accident been confirmed by any other source besides Mr. Mamoru Sato's blog? Seems that other web sites are just repeating Sato's claims of an accident occurring on Friday July 29, 2011. I would presume that other media would report the story if an accident indeed had occurred after four days.

Apparently, it was first independently posted by the Chinese blog, boxun.com, who in turn said it was first reported in a naval (college?) newspaper.

Via Defense Tech:

From South Korea’s Chosun Ibo newspaper:

Rumors are spreading quickly that radioactive materials were accidentally leaked from a state-of-the-art Chinese nuclear submarine moored in Dalian Port in Liaoning Province in the northeastern part of China.

The rumor was first reported on Saturday by Boxun.com, a website for overseas Chinese, before it was picked up by Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site similar to Twitter.

Citing People’s Liberation Army sources in Dalian, Boxun.com reported that there was an accidental leakage of radiation when engineers from a Chinese electronics company were installing equipment on the submarine.

Boxun reported that the accident happened suddenly, and that Chinese authorities had sealed off the area while an investigation was under way, while taking steps to ensure news of the accident did not spread.

The Chinese media and government have so far refrained from commenting on the rumors, which have stoked fears among netizens.

I despair of ever seeing a news source understand the difference between radiation and contamination...

So far, it's unclear whether this is a big spill or something gone wrong with the plant itself.

Assuming it happened at all, of course.
