Thought this may be of interest. Documents I found in the National Archives about a joint Piasecki/Fairey project to supply the H-21 to the RN, possibly Mamba powered.

Great find!

Seems to be another example of dismissing an idea because it can't meet an overly stringent, artificial specification and struggling along with the status quo, or nothing at all, instead of just accepting what's possible at that time.
 
Yep, AVIA 54/1676 has the best information on this proposal.
It was the Mamba that led to the proposal not being taken forward. The UK just didn't have a suitable turboshaft engine at that time. Plus the MoS seemed wedded to Bristol's Type 173 as they had already forked out a lot of money on it and wanted to see some return from the investment.
I would agree though that the original NA.43 requirements were far too ambitious for any helicopter then in prospect.
