Owl as ideal aerodynamic shape

Yes, I thought it would be a nice Russian bird, given it's origin was from Flateric and the environs look chilly. I'll see if I can google image my way to enlightenment on this one. That is one beak you don't want to be on the business end of!

Don't know how ideal that shape might be ... but that critter sure is in the running for the cutest aerodynamic shape. Of all time.

Ouch.... Pulled this up at home and my wife looked over my shoulder at JUST the right time...

If I may quote? "Squeeeeeeeeee!"

I think I'm deaf in one ear now :)

I have based my stealth fighter design aerodynamics "entirely" on Pteromus Volans.

Gyroscopic controlled and stabilized targeting system. Silly music in the background but you can see how the Owl can keep 'eyes on target' as it flies, twists and turns.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9hBpF_Zj4OA#at=63

This is actually an ability shared by most birds with long enough attention spans; chickens are an even better example as they'll keep their head in the same location in space, extending, shrinking, twisting their neck to keep their eyes on target:

But seeing this is an owl thread and not a flightless bird that is only good for food thread ;D

Besides owls are predators and would have to track while flying and their prey was running over uneven ground AT NIGHT its like comparing EODATS to first generation radars. And Owls are just way cooler than chickens

Judging the fact, that research was done into missiles with doves as targeting sensors and bats as
flying incendiary bombs, this species probably was lucky, that this skill was overlooked, until it
was easier to use electronics.... ::)

That's true, but I still feel for those moths in that DARPA experiment. That's creepy even to me...and I'm a biologist.

If you want to see some active camouflage, here is the best version I know:

Probably some lessons to be learned here. B)

This is a photoelectric system and is sensor cued (by the eye).

Yeesh Hey mind if I drag you off the side of a mountain by the HEAD!!!

WVR 'Dog' fight. Small and agile and being able to turn inside your opponent works pretty well ;D

It seems sometimes nature does a better job at aerodynamics and payload/lift (see 1:54) capability than us :D

That's nothin' (5:00)

The human equivalent would be an F-15E picking up a tank and flying away with it? ;D

"Your next drone might mimic the tail of a hummingbird for smoother flight"

Very interesting article, reminds me of the AHS logo. ;)

It was my long-time dream to let a dozen of prey birds equipped like this to fly in this mode over Groom Lake...

That would be a great idea!
