I was traveling in Tunisia last week and saw this four-wheeled APC guarding an intersection. The gun was covered but at first glance seemed bigger than a .50 cal, perhaps a 20 mm. Can anyone identify it?

The cited reference suggests it is a Fiat 6616, the 6614 variant armed with a 20mm cannon. Tunisa bought 110.

So that appears to be your mystery.

The Wikipedia entry actually says that Tunisia operates 110 of the Model 6614, not the Model 6616. A Google search shows that the 6616, while operating on substantially the same chassis, is an armored reconnaissance vehicle with a much larger 2-man turret. The 6616 also appears to have the power plant location reversed (engine rear) from the position of the louvers. So what I saw was definitely a 6614 with a .50 caliber heavy mg, the cover just made it appear bigger than it really is. What appeared to be a turret is actually a set of fold-up armored plates to protect the gunner. The images below of a Tunisian peacekeeper standing guard in West Africa and an old FIAT advertisement confirm the ID. Thanks, all!

Yes, this car is positively an Iveco (FIAT) 6614, as we can argue from the grilles of the engine compartment in the front of the vehicle.
