Bits of data available on Boeing's entry in DARPA Next-Generation Morphing Aircraft Structures (N-MAS) program (Lockheed and NextGen won). Co-planar joined wing, possible based on earlier MDC studies - at least Garret patent is mentioned, filed in 1996 and issued already after merger, in 1999. (This patent was previously found by Maki and Abraham Gubler - see here).

Configuration is patented by Boeing.

Hmm, déjà-vu all over again, shades of the Gérin Varivol. I have always thought the earlier Gérin concept, with wings like a airfoil-shaped mast with a retractable ribbed fabric sail, had great promise for light aircraft and UAVs.

Both the Russian designs and the Gérin designs seem like great starting points for a light close air support and counterinsurgency aircraft--STOL take-off and landing and high speed. I can already imagine what Burt Rutan and Scaled Composites could do with something like the Russian tandem design and a modern turboprop engine...Quickie's big brother goes to war! ;)

The only problem is, because of the way the morphing mechanism works, there's no room for underwing stores...

Considering the length of the fuselage I think that here is no need for them. With the fuselage hardpoints you can also play with the center of the gravity and weight distribution. To that time it is great design.

"Morphing wings," because "variable geometry" wing is so old school. It reminds me of when I was in school and we were working on the HSCT, because SST was so '70's. It's a shame our research can't keep up with our acronym generation.

I think that the third design is unrelated and is there only to illustrate the third high speed/dash configuration. In fact its this: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,4451.msg106812.html#msg106812

But the other two stages of mophing are somehow weird too. For example what is the advantage of having that kind of rounded fuselage, especially in front of the air intake?

Hmmm...their sense of aesthetics hasn't improved - not that the Lockheed one is a beauty.

With all that wing morphing and folding, isn't that going to affect internal volume in a negative way? Less room for fuel tank other systems...solve one problem create another? But I see where this is going eventually something that can morph almost like a bird.
