Hi,

The design OKB under the direction of Vladimir Myasishchev -- which had built the subsonic M-4 "Bison" and the one-off supersonic M-50 "Bounder" heavy jet bombers before being disbanded in 1960, to be resurrected in 1966 -- worked on their own concepts in parallel under the designation "M-20". The initial concept was a swing-wing aircraft with a strong resemblance to a scaled-up version of the US General Dynamics F-111 "Aardvark". This led to a canard aircraft with a "cranked arrow" wing; then concepts for canards with swing wings; and finally a concept for a swing-wing aircraft with a conventional rear tail assembly that had a resemblance to the US B-2.

Model of Myasishchev M-20-11 from USSR-Russian Aviation and Space Collectibles.

16-inch length model of Myasishchevs M-20-11 bomber project- one of M-20 famous project series sub variant (wich had various engine arrangements in one pack at the end of fuselage or in separate underwing nacelles, as well as empennage single or double. Work on the project started in 1967, when Soviet Union announced a competition for intercontinental strike-reconnaissance aircraft inspired by the US AMSA (Advanced Manned Strategic Aircraft).

Thanks, Triton, for this. I find the M-18 a very interesting project with so many variants. I look forward to more on this - and the M-20.

All these illustrations are from "Illustrated Encyclopedia of MDB airctaft" by Avico Press. It is very pity that Mr. Werner Budack (http://www.suchoj.com/) is so absent-minded man and does not remember where he copied these drawings.
Might guess apologize

It's one of Myasishchev's M-20 layouts. Piotr Butowski used the M-20-14 designation for it in an AIR Enthusiast magazine.

A set of 7 variants (the first two pictures are the same with wings straight and folded). You'll recognize the M-20-14 in the third picture:

Donald,

I believe this is the scale model of Sukhoi T-4 not Myasishchev M-20-21-III, What do you think?

Thanks for the 7 variants Stargazer2006; I love Myasishchevs as a rule and the M-20's are elusive & fascinating. Much appreciated.

Another site. I see interesting four engine layout.

I take it the M-18 was the last bomber that Myasischev designed before the whole heavy bomber project was handed over to Tupolev who then came up with the Tu-160? Because the M-18 does look similar in aerodynamic terms to the Tu-160.

In particolar the M 20-23 semees like a sort of Tu-134 UBL with swing wing and engines of the Tu-160....

M-20 variant III - based on layout schemes M-20-16, M-20-17, M-20-18, M-20-19, M-20-21

Hi! I'm interested in hesham-san's this excellent contribution.

The M-20 variant I is based on the layout of the M-20-1, M-20-2, M-20-5, M-20-6. The estimated take-off weight of this variant was about 150,000 kg

Can one buy this book? I have been searching for one on the M-18 & M-20 for years. And, no one does it better than Avico Press.

Is this book available? It is at the very top of my wish-list - for many years.
