X-2 moves one step closer towards 1st flight
The Mitsubishi X-2 stealth demonstrator has progress to Vr stage whereby the aircraft accelerated to rotation speed and the pilot pulled the nose wheel off the ground. This occurred at Nagoya Airfield on Apr. 11.

The first flight of the x-2 (ATD-X Shinshin) was performed in 4/22/2016 8:45, from Komaki to the Gifu air base.(Already landed after 30 minutes flight.)

Experimental. The ATD stood for Advanced Technology Demonstrator. It's basically an X-plane.

Are there any videos of the paddles engaged and deflecting thrust? I am guessing but I would assume any developmental follow on aircraft will switch to either 2D or symmetric vectoring nozzles (for stealth).

I wonder why they didn't move the paddle with the engine on? Maybe being cautious on security although you can find old stuff like this (see 1:12 mark).

You can also find lots of video of the X-31 doing paddle thrust vectoring.

Risk management. In any test program you start with the simple low risk items, when you are convinced those are all working you move on to more complex higher risk tasks, in a gradual build up.
 
It seems the aim is eventually to develop the F-3 fighter that will be more advanced than the F-35 due to US not allowing access to the most sensitive technologies so they will develop these themselves.

Assume the main reason for a F-3 is differences in requirement versus the F35 (more emphasis on interceptor/ air defence for the F-3) and to give the Japanese industry a domestic follow on to the F-2.
Claims of superiority versus the F35 probably intended for domestic consumption and to help justify the considerable extra development costs versus a larger F35 buy.

I believe JASDF still hope to get F-22. ;D
F-3 developmet needs very big money.

If USAF & politicians want to re-start the F-22 production they should offer it to the Japanese as well so the whole huge re-start cost doesn't all fall on Joe public in the US.

Anybody knows if structural tests were carried using X-2 flight airframe, or a second one was built for this purpose?
