Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

Those photos do NOT show the first production aircraft, that's the preproduction twin-seater #941. Here's the actual aircraft that had its maiden flight:

http://pilot.strizhi.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/img_1375_sm.jpg

Note the very interesting application of sawtooth RAM on the radome, something that was not present on the preproduction variants!

Here's #941 at last year's MAKS for comparison:

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

that photo from pilot.strizhi seems to show two helmets ... i think that is the first flight of the KUB (twin seater) ... you might be right about the pre -production prototype though .. i simply took photos from the migavia site

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

[quote author=www.flightglobal.com]
The two-seat MiG-29KUB flew on 18 March from the company's Lukhovitsky test centre near Moscow.

;)

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

you are right .. so basically the production Mig 29k is yet to fly

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

Well, it make me a little mess-up here, MiG-29K #941 is actually a single seater aircraft using same 2-seater KUB airframe, and #947 is the "real" two-seater MiG-29KUB ???

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

there is no change to the basic airframe for the K?KuB .. except the addition or deletion of the second seat

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

He's right though, #941 is a single seater, contrary to what I said. Darn canopy :D

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Oww! Watching that little tailhook ceremony hurt. Hey is it just me or does it seem like Kusnetsov has large bare patches on her flight deck that are missing non-skid?

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

In any case a great improvement over the 9.31.

slower approach speed.

and of course , very little smokey smokey.

The Indian Navy has done a good job on this one with Mikoyan.

In fact I won't be surprised if the Russians go with this bird themselves till the Navalised PAK-FA becomes available.

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

But I have to admit, I miss these sleeker lines of the single seater !!! :-[

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

agreed on that, Deino...

Already done. Order of 23 for russian navy untill 2011. Su-33 will go away from service in 2015.

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Any idea, why the Su-33 were never updated with the SM-modifications ?? ???

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Hey folks,
Russia is interested in buying 24 new Mig-29K/Mig-29KUB, which will replace the Su-33 within 2015. Those new Migs will be based on the ones now produced for Indian Navy.
China, which was interested in Su-33/Su-33UB (MAKS 200?: Su-33UB with TVC and cracked canards), will instead might build a navy version of the J-11. I think, this version is called "J-11C" (or "J-11BJ").
So not a navalised PAK-FA or a "Su-33SM" so far!

And this had reportedly its maiden flight on 31. August this year as the J-15 !

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Su-27KUB officially cancelled (unofficially it was known much earlier)

DoD is planning to buy 26 (twenty six) MiG-29K till the end of 2011

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Does this mean the Sea Flankers were just a little too big and heavy for effective safe operation on the Kuznetsov class carriers or is it more a case that a an order for suitable Sea Flanker with modern Avionics was just that bit too expensive for the Navy to develop ?

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

They were banking on chinese orders.

They want China to order at least over 40 to make it meaningful to keep the line open.

despite the J-15 the whole business is still open.

If the Chinese have issues with the J-15 they may turn to the naval flanker.

Even if I now leave the original topic ... the Chinese deal is dead !!! and I agree with You, the current situation of the J-15 is still open, but it is a Chinese "naval Flanker" (for more see here: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,5991.0/highlight,j-15.html

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

the J-11 B navalisation effort has big issues.

a naval flanker with just the WS-10 12-13 ton engine is not going to cut it.

they are working on a 15 ton beast with ukraine under the taihang project.

It is one thing to put up grainy pics of a new pirate flanker and another thing to make the Su-27 actually carrier capable.

Su-33 is not out yet.

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Maybe You are correct !

Re: first mig 29k (indian avatar) flown

I know it's not exactly the correct tread but since it is also an "Indian" project (at least for India) and I didn't want to start a new one.

Here's the first clearer picture of the updated MiG-29UPG ... and I'm surprised to see the huge SMT-tank on the spine. Does anyone have more info about the whole update package ??

On February 4 the first MiG-29UPG destined for the Indian Air Force made its first flight from manufacturer RAC MiG’s Gromov LII airfield near Moscow.

Up to 63 surviving MiG-29 and MiG-29UB IAF aircraft are being upgraded with the first six undergoing upgrade in Russia - the remainder will be worked on at HAL Nasik in due course. All upgraded aircraft are due to have been returned to service by 2013.

The upgrade includes new RD-33-3M turbofan engines, ejection seat, central digital computer, Zhuk-ME radar, helmet-mounted targeting system and upgraded navigation and radio systems

Re: Mig-29K and MiG-29KUB sea trials

Hmm ... maybe we could merge both treads regarding the Indian MiG-29's and this K/KUB into a single one

Alexander Kruzhalin was chief of GLITz
reportedly, today tests program had elements that put crew eager to push the envelope too hard and she started to disintegrate in the air...

All Russian Air Force MiG-29 flight operations have been banned for the time being, following the crash of one aircraft earlier in the week.
The MiG-29 flight suspension potentially grounds well over 250 aircraft, including single-seat MiG-29As and two-seat MiG-29UBs.
http://www.armedforces-int.com/news/russia-grounds-mig-29s-after-fatal-crash.html

There was also interesting article on http://www.livefist.blogspot.com/ about how is the Indian Navy unsatisfied with the "K"s, but I cant find it at the moment.

Just found at the RussianPlanes.net page ... the first new MiG-29KUB (9-47) for the Russian Navy !

Technically not the first, just the first one painted. ;)

Thanks ! Do You know how many are already finished ??? ... and will they gain the same Eagle or Tiger badge on the tail ?

Deino

A couple unpainted ones has been flying in Zhukovsky for a while, b/n 30 (K) and b/n 50 (KUB). 51 is KUB, it arrived together with b/n 31, which is a K. As to tigers and eagles, not sure if those will be added when they are handed over. I know that KnAAPO/KnAAZ are painting them on Su-33 together with camo after modernization/service. Hopefully they will paint them on in squadron, and fix the horrible fail on the tail at same time...
