Since we have threads already for materials science and AI, I thought one for advances in medicine would be appropriate.

To start. I don't think people understand just how big of a deal GLP-1s will be.

As we can see here, most of our healthcare spending is for people with one or more chronic diseases. Obesity and diabetes are among them and also cause much of the rest. One thing to note here is the healthcare spending of people with a given number of chronic conditions varies little between Medicare and the rest, despite those in the former obviously being a lot older. The well known increase in costs with age seems to simply reflect that the elderly have more chronic diseases. There are elderly people who manage to live well into their 90s without any major health issues and end up dying a quick and painless death from old age, which is surely how all of us would like to go.

Now that we have a drug that cures the root cause of obesity and diabetes rather than the symptoms, we hopefully will see substantial drops in healthcare costs and many lives saved, once it is available inexpensively and in convenient oral form. And more treatments are in the pipeline for dementia, arthritis, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. It is possible that we will be able to science ourselves out of being swamped by healthcare costs for an aging population.

Tanning bed hazards
Tanning bed use is tied to almost a three-fold increase in melanoma risk, and for the first time, scientists have shown how these devices cause melanoma-linked DNA damage across nearly the entire skin surface, reports a new study led by Northwestern Medicine and University of California, San Francisco.

On vaccines and travel

Firestorm
During the ACIP meeting, Cynthia Nevison gave a presentation about the disease burden of hep B. Ms. Nevison is a climate researcher and does not have a medical degree nor experience in vaccines. Politico reported she had ties to groups that oppose vaccines

Using advanced but now common lab technologies, along with published data from vaccinated individuals, the researchers identified a two-step sequence in which these vaccines activate a certain type of immune cell, in turn riling up another type of immune cell. The resulting inflammatory activity directly injures heart muscle cells, while triggering further inflammatory damage. One rare but real risk of the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines is myocarditis, or inflammation of heart tissue. Symptoms—chest pain, shortness of breath, fever and palpitations—appear in the absence of any viral infection. And they happen quickly: within one to three days after a shot.

On stem cells
"This research brings the clinical application of regenerative medicine for intractable diseases commonly seen in dogs, such as heart disease, neurological disorders, and blood disorders, closer to reality," Professor Hatoya added.

"Canine-derived VTN can be produced stably and cost-effectively using E. coli, making it a useful foundational technology with broad applicability from research to clinical use."

Viral bonding
Viruses are typically described as tiny, perfectly geometric shells that pack genetic material with mathematical precision, but new research led by scientists at Penn State reveals a deliberate imbalance in their shape that helps them infect their hosts.

DNA nanofabrication
A dissertation study at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) developed two-dimensional fishnet-like structures from DNA origami for silicon surfaces and investigated how different conditions affect their formation. The results provide new possibilities for DNA-assisted lithography and thus for the fabrication of new types of materials, for example, for optics.

I cannot believe there are still people out there who think tanning is a good idea. Even if you're not worried about skin cancer, it'll give you wrinkles, which completely defeats the aesthetic purpose.

On another topic; the chance of getting dementia is falling quite dramatically, down by ⅔ for all age groups below 95 since 1984.

This is remarkable when we know so little about it. Scientists suspect better nutrition, lower smoking rates, and treatments for hypertension and high cholesteral are the reason.

That and, sadly, natural selection.

Time to decompress
Letting out a swear word in a moment of frustration can feel good. Now, research suggests that it can be good for you, too: Swearing can boost people's physical performance by helping them overcome their inhibitions and push themselves harder on tests of strength and endurance, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.

When laboratory mice suffer brain damage, e.g., from an injection, research group leader Jan Deussing has observed that a certain type of cell always appears and is activated in the immediate vicinity of the injury site. However, the experienced neurobiologist was unable to explain what kind of cells these were. This was a good project for a master's student to take a closer look at.

The FDA has approved oral Wegovy (everyone forgets that Wegovy is the weight loss drug while Ozempic is for diabetes)

I'm more interested in Eli Lilly's Orforglipron. It's a small molecule drug so it will be less expensive to manufacture and it should have fewer side effects.

But, either way, for those who hate needles, a new age has begun

It's really frustrating that our brains haven't evolved from hunter-gatherer food scarcity optimization. And that's precisely why we need new drugs to fix that
One would hope education would be the first go-to, but with people 'doing their own research' on youtube, tiktok or 4chan, that is probably asking too much.

Drugs it is then.

Not saying no, but I'd try consistent objective fact based education first.

People are already very well educated on what to and not to eat, they ignore it.

So people use GLPs to lose weight and vapes to stop smoking.

I think you will see I whole bunch of serious health issues coming in the next 5 ~ 10 years from those two products. There already are multiple issues stemming from their use.

I see neither of these as progress.

Regards,

There are a lot of things that education is needed for, diet, fitness, health, societal responsibility and they are ignored for political targets. Hell, universities are finding they have to educate folk in our native tongue now because schools are on targets for this, that and the other. It's a pity we cannot rely on parents to teach cooking and nutrition but Sara my ex (Child's Speech therapist) had numerous parents on the books who believed potty training was the duty of the school.

SNAFU?

I'm sure people said the same about Prozac and Lipitor

Dude your obviously on GLP's and hence the basis though the thread.

You think there are zero repercussions either of the above?

Lipitor, common side effects include muscle pain, joint pain, diarrhea, and nausea, with rare, serious risks of liver damage or severe muscle breakdown.
Prozac, (fluoxetine) downsides commonly include early-treatment agitation, insomnia, nausea, and sexual dysfunction (low libido, delayed orgasm). Other common side effects are dry mouth, headache, diarrhea, and sweating. While usually mild, it can sometimes cause severe issues like increased bleeding risk,, or, in rare cases, suicidal thoughts or mania.

GLP have massive side effects, and the bigger issue is the fools that buy it online because they cannot get it anywhere. They don't even know what they are injecting themselves with, an injection that can lower weight is the holy grail...............people are taking it like pez after a big weekend of eating.

You even seen any fake Prozac of Lipitor? Nope because they are widely available.
