Since we have threads already for materials science and AI, I thought one for advances in medicine would be appropriate.
To start. I don't think people understand just how big of a deal GLP-1s will be.
As we can see here, most of our healthcare spending is for people with one or more chronic diseases. Obesity and diabetes are among them and also cause much of the rest. One thing to note here is the healthcare spending of people with a given number of chronic conditions varies little between Medicare and the rest, despite those in the former obviously being a lot older. The well known increase in costs with age seems to simply reflect that the elderly have more chronic diseases. There are elderly people who manage to live well into their 90s without any major health issues and end up dying a quick and painless death from old age, which is surely how all of us would like to go.
Now that we have a drug that cures the root cause of obesity and diabetes rather than the symptoms, we hopefully will see substantial drops in healthcare costs and many lives saved, once it is available inexpensively and in convenient oral form. And more treatments are in the pipeline for dementia, arthritis, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. It is possible that we will be able to science ourselves out of being swamped by healthcare costs for an aging population.
