I have come across these pictures of McDonnell Douglas F-101B Voodoo Serial Number 57-0272 with a strange under nose sensor and carrying a MiM-23 Hawk missile.
It is late 60's or early 70's from my guess.

Does anyone have any more information on this project, its name and what was being tried?

Another member stumbled across one of those photos as well today, I'll add his post from another thread, as well as my potentially wide of the mark answer:
Stumbled across this interesting picture of a F-101 Voodoo equipped with what looks like additional optical sensors and armed with a MIM-23 HAWK SAM.
One assumes it's a trial configuration for the HAWK's performance....?
It would be interesting to know the timeframe, as the Iranian Air Force itself would later go on to operationally arm it's F-4 Phantom's and F-14 Tomcat's with a modified HAWK missiles.

Though I seem to have a vague memory of a air-launched HAWK variant as part of an USAF ASAT program? My brain is fried at the moment, so I could be wrong.

What the frack was a F-101 doing with a Hawk, I have no idea... sounding rocket ? ABM target ?

There was an ASAT concept involving a F-106 that indirectly led to the well known F-15 one (that stared in Red Storm Rising).

Another more puzzling picture

On one of the facebook sites i posted this, a guy that knew about the Voodoo than pointed out that the MG-13 radar was a pulse radar and the MIM-23 Hawk was continuous wave guided.
Maybe the sensor under the nose was a radar of sorts to provide continuous wave guidance for the Hawk and the MG-13 was used to find the target.
What intrigues me is that the Voodoo also as an IR sensor .

Maybe it was some form of TISEO but that would make no sense with the Hawk

"Part of an USAF ASAT program?"

Hmm, that and the additional sensors might make sense.

(Cheers Grey Havoc for editing and finding more appropriate thread)

Isn't the red object just a DART-type towed target?

Hi everyone, I can gladly help you out with the red object towed target in question since I was on the test project for the acceptance and use of that target for USAF programs requiring a more sophisticated gunnery target system. It was to replace the DART Aerial gunnery target which had been in the DoD inventory for years. The tow target in question is the FIGAT, Fiberglass Aerial Target. It was actually orange in color and had a projectile scoring system in it. At the time it was to be used for sighting in the 20mm Gun on the F-15 and later for the Sixgun program. I was a Tow Systems Operator (TSO) and on the acceptance testing for the FIGAT and Tow target missions for the following gun programs. There’s a good possibility I was the TSO on the Voodoo in that picture.
I’m confused as to why that picture was included with the others since there was no connection to my recollection. Hope this answers your question.
Cheers,
D. George

This was a test project in the 60’s & 70’s at the 4756th ADC Weapons Interceptor School, Tyndall AFB FL, that at present I am unable to recall the program name. Henceforth, the ball shaped object on top in front of the pilots wind screen is the IR Sensor equipped with the Voodoo. The much bigger one on the bottom is a video camera that was being tested to ID intruders from a distant before locking on to them.

The other photo is an F-101B towing a FIGAT gunnery target with an F-106 chase all from an entirely different program for which I don’t understand the confusion and why it’s added here.
