A major RCAF role is supplying military bases in the high Arctic (e.g. CFS Alert at the northern tip of Ellesmire Island). Prior to summer, many thousands of tons of supplies are delivered to Thule, Greenland by ship. Then - during the long days of summer - flown to the gravel runway at Alert.
