There have been many attempts - both failed and successful. The latter are usually because locals were embarrassed by the name. The question is: why? Most humans enjoy a bit of puerile humour ... and will find it in the most innocent of places.

But there is also a heritage consideration. For example, take Shitterton in Devon. This gorgeous little hamlet has a name derived from an Anglo-Saxon original dating back a thousand years. Unsuccessfully, Victorian puritans tried to rename as something less offensive. But less offensive than what?

The Anglo-Saxon name for Shitterton would have probably have been Scitetun - literally 'a town with a place to shit'. In other words, accommodating a natural function performed by every human being at least once a day. But, since the Norman Conquest, English speakers have been conditioned to believe that Franco/Latin-derived words are less vulgar than their Anglo-Saxon equivalents.

So, would 'Excréterville' or the Norman-French 'Fienhamelet' really be an improvement? Obviously the denizens of Shitterton don't think so.
