Definitely not.

Here's an enlargement. Similar to this Rolls-Royce concept...

Some hideous concept pulled out of someone's left earhole, I suspect.

Ah come on, they didn't make everything up. While they did do their share of speculating they certainly weren't OMNI magazine or the like.

Could be this:

I think that was a Northrop (RALS?) design, IIRC, c.1981, part of a NASA study.

That Rolls-Royce study was never serious, though much illustrated in the 1980s in the absence of any published P.1216 etc. pics.

Is the International Combat Arms Magazine still active?

I own three that are from 1989.

AFAIK they went out of business years ago. However I broke down and bought the lot (roughly four years worth) for $28 so I should know in a few days what that thing is. :D

Oh. Thats too bad. International Combat Arms is probably my favorite magazine that I own.
BTW, the three ones I own are about the revealed stealth bomber, the 'Star Wars' aerospace projects, and something about the F-16 or F-18 fighters.

In the stealth bomber one, I found an article on the A-10 Warthog and came across an artist's concept of some coaxil rotor helicopter. The pic was unlabeled.

The coaxial helo is what the Ka-50 was thought to look like at the time.

I subscribed to ICA, I have issues May 1987 to the final issue, November 1989. It was certainly an interesting magazine that covered quite a lot of different military topics.

I suspect that the aircraft on the cover of the July 1987 issue (Supersonic Jump Jets) was speculative, as there doesn't seem to be anything about it in the article. The silhouette appears to be the P.1214-3 (theres a picture of it later on). A couple other concepts, probably also speculative...

Some of the magazines haven't held up too well, I should probably scan them all. Just a matter of finding the time and getting a better scanner...

Robert, when I was a teenager, ICA was my favorite magazine. I was a freak for all things aviation and military, and the first time I discovered ICA (1983), it was almost like finding porn.

There was some controversy about the magazine's managing editor, Andy Lightbody in later years. After ICA folded, he was a "military expert" for CBS radio, and covered the first Gulf War extensively, even winning some awards. But someone found out that his academic creditintials were fudged (he claimed a degree from Tulane University in Louisiana... they said they'd never heard of him.. and then he claimed a degree from "the University of Beverly Hills", which was unaccredited. To my knowledge, he hasn't edited a publication or worked for a big news outlet since. He tried to parlay his old military writing into an anti-terrorist consultant gig, and now is in Colorado, working at a local radio station and doing various media consulting gigs on the side. Before I found all this out, I actually tracked him down and sent him an email asking if he'd ever consider starting ICA up again. I never got a reply. Maybe he's embarrassed by the whole thing.

Regardless of his academic cred, the magazine was fantastic... it was like Jane's for a layman audience. I've only got a few back-issues, so if you have an extensive collection, by all means you should scan them for posterity.

I use to buy Combat Arms in the 80's. I am trying to find the one with the article on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. It was done at Ft. Hood Tx. I believe the photographs were taken at Jack Mountain Range. The back of my head was in one of the pictures while uploading my vehicle during gunnery. I was in C Co 2/41 Inf. We were the 2nd Battalion in the army to receive the Bradley. Our sister unit was issued theirs about 2 months before us. Would appreciate any help I can get finding the magazine.

My fave' had cover art by Berkey that my teen self took for real. I liked 21st Century Science and Technology...even if it was a La Rouche rag...it was how I first learned of Steve Howe and Stan Borowski of NTR fame
