Researchers at Virginia Tech have come up with a new way to remove ice from surfaces; using an electric field that dislodges individual crystals. They've managed to achieve up to 75% removal. The most obvious application, and the one that will be of most interest on this forum, will be to stop ice buildup on aircraft wings and control surfaces, which is of extreme benefit to safety. But they also say it could be used on automobile windshields and inside refrigerators.
Iceproof planes would also revolutionize one of my pet interests: cloud seeding. As it is, airplanes have to deliver condensation nuclei underneath the cloud and hope the updraft will carry it in. Flying inside the cloud means not having to depend on updrafts and seeding material could be delivered with far more precision, but introduces the danger of icing. If we can stop the ice, we can make it rain.
