Any one know of a decent book on Soviet / Russian helicopter history? I remember seeing one in the 1980s with an Mi-24 on the cover but for the life of me can't remember the title.

Books in English dealing with Soviet/Russian helicopters in general and not a particular type or manufacturer are scarce. The only one I can think of (and probably also the one you were thinking of) is Soviet Military Helicopters, by Hans-Heiri Stapfer, published by Arms and Armour in 1991. It is well done and full of photos, but with 58 pages only it only scratches the surface... There are several copies being sold online:

You could be thinking of "Soviet Helicopters: Design, Development and Tactics" by John Everett-Heath.

2nd Edition (pictured below) is from 1989
Publisher is Jane's
Hardcover, 224 pages
ISBN: 0710605722

That would be a good topic for Messrs. Gordon and Komissarov to sink their teeth into.
