It had been done before: the Sncaso SO-9000 TRIDENT flew in 1953.

After big search,the only possibility to involve in this competition would be
with Fairey company ?.

There was also Armstrong Whitworth's 'B' submission to ER.161T - the smaller, single-engined AW.172. This was another 'narrow delta' design but CTOL and powered by a reheated PS.53 Gyron Junior

AWA favoured their larger 'A' submission - the AW.171 - thinking it had more development potential.
