In "L’aviation française de bombardement et de renseignement-French bombardment and intelligence aviation (1918-1940)", page .370, Raymond Danel & Jean Cuny quote that between 1935 and 1939 tests were carried out on unorthodox weapons such as the towed mine "Frémont- Castelli", initially intended to arm fighters crossing a formation of enemy planes but which was also intended for a time to defend the rear sector of a bomber.

Now, could a tether in the tail carry side firing submunitions?

It is interesting to underline the fact that the idea of towed bombs long before the Geraet Schlinge or the cable bombs or towed bombs of the E.Kdo 25 in Germany in the last years of the war. France was already thinking about their operational experiments even before the start of ww2.
