There was an astonishing array of AFV projects during the Great War. Numerous designs and experiements were gone through before the first tanks took to the battlefield, and this inventiveness continued.
Among the most interesting never-weres of the Great War (even if we discount designs pre-dating the first successful tanks) is the British 'Flying Elephant', the first serious (as opposed to paper whimsy) 100-ton tank project. It grew out of aBritish desire to develop a shell-proof tank, all other AFVs at that time being armoured only against rifle and machine-gun fire. You can see a two-part article I wrote about it here (yes, shameless self-promotion, but there you go!): http://www.landships.freeservers.com/new_pages/todd_flyeleph1.htm http://www.landships.freeservers.com/new_pages/todd_flyeleph2.htm
