F-104 Starfighter Projects

An XF5V-1?

By great coincidence, the winter '08 issue of The Hook magazine (pub'd by the US Navy's Tailhook Association) has mention of what is claimed to be an XF5V. (Copy below) Yes, there were several F-104As at NAS China Lake; their website has photos of 3 different airplanes in the 1958-1960 timeframe, including pics of this aircraft (56-0757). But the website makes no mention of it being modified, let alone to the extent mentioned in the article. This is a new one to me, and I can find no other reference to it. Anybody have further info/confirmation. And, as the Hook editor asks, 'what happened to the F2V, F3V and F4V?' I've never heard of them, either...

Gentlemen:
Not to put too fine a point on this but the XF5V-1 information as published in winter '08 edition of The Hook appears to be based on an article I wrote for the April, 2004 edition of Internet Modeler. The XF5V-1 is a total work of fiction and even though the Navy flew a few F-104's they were never designated as the XF5V-1. No F-104's were modified. No extended wings, no twin ventral fins, no aft opening canopy, no heavier arresting hook. The only F-104 so modified was a Hasegawa 72nd scale kit that I built for the article. Do a google search for April 2004 Internet Modeler/Lockheeds for the Navy. One of the giveaways that this is an April Fools joke are the pilots "associated" with the project: I.B. Fulinya, A. P. Rilfool and so on. Funny, a similar thing happened on a subsequent April issue of IM about the P-47's that Israel flew...Oh well

Thanks for the heads-up. Link: http://www.internetmodeler.com/2004/april/aviation/f-104e.php

See, this is why I've never done an "April Fools" article for APR, even though I've been occasionally tempted. The closest I came was in the very last issue of the original run, where I discussed - briefly - the mythology of the Nazi Flying Saucers and Nazi missions to the moon and Mars. Hopefully my repeated use of the word "bullshit" helped get across my view of the factual basis of those myths...

LOL!! Thanks for the INSIDE story on the XF5V -- I wonder if anyone (besides me) will tell the Hook editor, and what he'll do with the info.

When I was a little kid, about 9 or 10 & just starting building models, I started on Hawk's 1/48 kits & one a/c that had me fascinated was the F-104 & Hawk's kit. At some point then I stumbled upon a pic of a German Navy (IIRC) F-104 model & of course it had had "Marine" on its side. Naturally, since the F-104s had arrestor hooks & it had Marine on the side, I figured they were carrier a/c too!

NF-104 for tourism:

Not an unknown project, but I've unearthed some brief data on the F-104H.

A proposed export variant of the F-104G without the NASARR, optical gunsight and simplified equipment. Empty equipped weight was 13,492lbs and overload 28,440lbs. The TF-104H was 13,750lbs empty and 24,800lbs in overload condition. The F-104H was offered to Saudi Arabia in 1964.
In December 1965 Saudi Arabia ordered BAC Lightnings, I wonder whether the offer a year earlier was an attempt to gain an export order away from the Lightning or whether it was the poor equipment of the F-104H that put them off ordering the F-105G had it been available to them?

Color it gone! I don't think the Luftwaffe would like it even if it was beer-colored. My opinion... -SP

Supercool.
Indeed still remain some resemblance with XF-90.

Somwhere in Italy, Maranello (home of Ferrary plants) if I remember well, there is an actual F-104S painted with Ferrari livery...

Fascinating - some of these designs are even creepier than the VTOL starfighter!

This one is probably in better condition.

From my dear Scott's site,

the Lockheed NF-104 was called CL-586;

Triggered by the thread about the F-104 twin (http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,18149.0.html, think,
we should merge them), I looked through, but apart from the picture in #15, it seem, that it wasn't mentioned still yet.
Starting in 1964, the Entwicklungsring Süd GmbH (EWR) started studies for using the F-104G as basis for a high altitude
reconnaissance aircraft. The first layout (G HA) was for a modified aircraft fitted with two additional ramjets, carried by a new
center wing. The predicted maximun ceiling was 35 km on a ballistic flight over a distance of 60 to 70 km. this solution was
judged to offer "reasonable" flight characteristics, but much too high fuel consumption.
The next variant (G HAR)should carry two additional hybrid rocket engines, using a combination of solid and liquid fuel.
This configuration was deemed to be easier, but the considerable weight of the rocket engines at the tail was regarded as
being prone to problems, flight characteristics were not studied.
The last variant should use a "Hauptstromtriebwerk" (Main stream engine ?) rocket engine developed by Bölkow, fitted below
the fuselage. It should enable flights with phases of up to 40 km length above a height of at least 20 km, max. height 32 km.
All flight profiles would have included phases without propulsion, that could have led to uncontrollable situations, so a reaction
control, similar to the NF-104A was proposed, but in the end all those studies were stopped.

A small addition to the F-104 stable: F-104 with U2 radome.

Nice find Greg!
I wonder how it effected over all speed?
Such a radome would afford a slightly larger radar dish I guess!!

Hi,

although those drawings is not new,and must of us know them very well, but
they are still keeping on their mighty profiles.

My dear Scott,

of course I spoke about upper drawing of the sketch, but do you have a drawing to it
(early Archangel)?.

From the looks of things, the Model CL-521 was intended primarily as a tactical nuclear delivery platform (laydown/delayed action), with a secondary role as a forward point defense interceptor.

Hi everybody

Here the RF-104G1 and RTF-104G1 advanced reconnaissance versions of the F-104G.

Thanks for any help.
